Cantu takes big chip lead into Day 3 of EPT Vilamoura

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

After two full days of action in the second stop on the European Poker Tour Season 7 schedule, taking place in Vilamoura Portugal, the impressive starting field of 384 players has been pared down to just 69, and it’s American poker pro Brandon Cantu atop the leader-board with a towering stack of 557,400 chips. Should he take down the EPT Vilamoura championship, Cantu would join a very exclusive group of poker players that have won a World Series of Poker bracelet, a World Poker Tour title, and a European Poker Tour title. Currently only Roland DeWolfe and Gavin Griffin have accomplished the impressive trifecta.

Cantu will have his work cut out for him however. The remaining field of 69 players is loaded with top-flight poker talent like JP Kelly, Luca Pagano, Nuno Coelo, and Arnaud Mattern. The latter narrowly missed taking down the first tournament of the EPT Season 7 tour in Estonia, and is looking to make history of his own as the first two-time EPT champion.

But don’t feel too bad for the players who have been eliminated; Vilamoura is a vacation paradise with some of the best beaches and golfing in the world, so anyone who booked an extended stay but has already been eliminated still has quite a bit to do!

Day 3 of the EPT Vilamoura poker tournament will begin at Noon local time.

384 players enter EPT Vilamoura poker tournament

Monday, August 30th, 2010

The European Poker Tour continues to break attendance across Europe, this time it was the Portuguese tournament record that fell by the wayside. The EPT’s €5,000 buy-in Championship Event in Vilamoura Portugal attracted a total of 384 entrants over the two Day 1 flights.

The 384 players represents the largest field for a Portuguese poker tournament besting the 322 entrants that participated in last season’s Vilamoura tournament on the EPT– and the €1,862,400 prize-pool is also the richest in Portuguese poker history.

One particular entrant is sure to garner some additional attention after an alleged chat-log was posted on the 2+2 Poker Forum. Sorel Mizzi, high on the leader-board with 132,000 chips, has been accused of trying to assemble a Multi-Accounting/Ghosting team by an anonymous poster. Mizzi replied in the thread that the conversation was bits and pieces of other conversations, and fabrications, that took part over a year’s time, and that he was contacted by an extortionist threatening to take the conversation public. However, Mizzi’s vague details –specifically which parts of the conversation are fabricated and which are real—as well as his condescending talk have many calling for his head.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out should Sorel make a deep run in Vilamoura.

Checking Your Poker Affilaite Site Backlinks

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

If you’ve been following along with our guide to maximum SEO for poker affiliate web sites, you have certainly learned by now that back-links are a nutritious part of this complete SEO meal! Back-links are an off-site SEO technique that tells Google and other search engine just how important everyone else thinks your poker affiliate site is.

More back-links = more importance = higher search engine indexing!

So you’ve set up a bunch of back-links and you’re pretty happy with your progress thus far. The next step is to keep an eye on those back-links, checking them for quality and accuracy on a regular basis. If your back-links start the fall apart without your knowledge, you could start losing position on Google and never even realize why.

It’s important to keep in mind when checking your back-links that they are not going to appear instantly. In fact, it can take a back links checker just as long to include a new back link as it can take a search engine to re-index your site according to your back link SEO optimization. That’s anywhere from a few days to several months.

How to Check Back-Links
Checking your back-links is pretty easy. There are plenty of online sites that will run the check for you, requiring only that you enter your URL in a text box and click “OK”. The only problem is that no back-link checker actually hits all of your back-links.

To get the most accurate results, you’ll want to use a few back-link checks at a time. It’s best to check on your back-links about once a week to ensure all is going nice and smooth.

Back-Link Checkers
Our favorite back-link checker is found at Yahoo, called the Site Explorer Tool. It’s incredibly fast and easy to use, and offers the best overall results.

To use Yahoo Site Explorer, do the following:

  1. Go to http://www.yahoo.com
  2. Enter the following text in the search area: “site:www.yourdomainname.com”
  3. When you press enter, the Yahoo Site Explorer loads. Under the search area, two tabs appear. The first is Pages (shows the number of pages in your domain) and the second is “Inlinks” (shows the number of back links pointing to your site from other pages). Click “Inlinks”.
  4. You now see a complete list of all the web pages with a link back to your web site. Note that just by looking at the “Inlinks” tab, you see the number of pages with back links to your web site.
  5. You can also see how many back links are pointing to a specific page on your web site by entering the search terms: “site:www.yourdomainname.com/yourpage.html

LinkDiagnosis: Another great back link checker is found on www.LinkDiagnosis.com. This web site will give you back-links in order of their Google Page Rank (PR) quality. Unfortunately, this site only works with a FireFox web browser. If you’re running IE or Safari, either go download FireFox or don’t bother trying.

BackLinkWatch: www.BackLinkWatch.com is another good back link checker that offers you more extensive information, like the anchor text and no follow data for each back link.

Sorel Mizzi faces new cheating allegations

Friday, August 27th, 2010

Sorel Mizzi has already drawn the ire from the poker community when it was revealed that he bought out another player who had made a deep-run in a tournament; taking over for Chris Vaughn in the Full Tilt Poker $1 million guaranteed tournament back in 2007. Later Mizzi was banned from PokerStars for multi-accounting on that site as well, and now Mizzi is facing new allegations which imply the poker superstar was attempting to setup a multi-accounting team using remote access computer programs.

The latest rumor started with an anonymous post on the 2+2 Poker Forums –where else—showing an alleged chat-log between Sorel Mizzi and Steve Weinstein, better known as Thorladen in online poker circles. For his part, Thorladen denied any wrongdoing and said he is complying with any investigation by Full Tilt Poker.

Mizzi’s response was a bit more erratic, and puzzling: At one point citing jealousy, and stating that he was the victim of attempted extortion by someone who had gotten a hold of his chat logs and pieced them together/fabricated parts to hurt his reputation.

While the chat-logs credibility is in question, neither Thorladen nor Mizzi have flat out refuted the authenticity of the chat-log. We’ll keep you posted on any new developments in the story, since the issue is likely to carry on for some time.

Stock Trader wins WPT Legends of Poker tournament

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Andrew Frankenberger started the final table of the World Poker Tour Legends of Poker tournament with the biggest chip-stack, and when the last cards were dealt he had amassed all the chips at the table, giving the Day Trader/semi-pro poker player his first major poker tournament victory –which includes a WPT title as well as $750,000 in first-place prize-money.

Frankenberger had a few bumps in the road along the way, relinquishing the chip-lead for a while before regaining it during three-handed play. However, when Frankenberger eliminated Tom Lee in third place he took a 3-to-1 chip advantage into heads-up play, and needed only a few hands to finish off runner-up Kyle Wilson.

Heading into the final table most people had their eyes on poker pro Jared Jaffe, but Jaffe fell by the wayside after slow-playing top-pair on the flop Q-7-4, only to see a second 7 hit on the turn. When the money went in Jaffe saw the bad news as his Q-J was in rough shape against Kyle Wilson’s 9-7.

Here are the complete Final-Table Results for the Legends of Poker tournament:

1.    Andrew Frankenberger — $750,000
2.    Kyle Wilson — $370,000
3.    Tom Lee — $174,772
4.    Tom Braband — $109,000
5.    Jared Jaffee — $86,000
6.    Franco Brunetti — $63,000

Optimizing Your Affiliate Website for Optimal SEO

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

On-Site SEO is the process of optimizing your poker affiliate web-site for maximum search engine indexing potential.  SEO, or “Search Engine Optimization”, is generally something that can encompass the entire world wide web, separated as “internal” (on-site) and external (off-site). This article will focus on using key phrases to maximize your poker affiliate site’s search engine rankings via on-site SEO.

Key Phrases are the terms we hope our visitors will search for to find our web site. For example, if your site is geared towards “online poker bonuses”, a logical key phrase would be “online poker bonuses”.

You would want to use this key phrase liberally in your content, perhaps linking to a page that provides a list of online poker sites and their respective bonuses. But key phrases should not be limited to the visible content either. The link to this page should contain this exact key phrase, such as:

html://www.yoursite.com/online-poker-bonuses.html

Within that page might be a link further detailing a Full Tilt Poker bonus, which should contain that key phrase along with the link:

html://www.yoursite.com/full-tilt-poker-bonus.html

The key phrase for every page you create should be found within the document at various intervals. It should be in the title, in the first paragraph, in the middle of the content and again at the end, as well as multiple times in between. This is what is known in the SEO world as “keyword density”.

You want the key phrase to be densely populated among the content, but do not stuff keywords. By this we mean put them in inappropriate places within the text. Work them into your content fluently for the best results. For example

[Title] Full Tilt Poker Bonus
[Content] The Full Tilt Poker bonus pays all new players 100% up to $600. To earn the Full Tilt Poker bonus, you’ll need to be a first-time depositor registering a new player account, etc.

Key phrases should also be placed in your meta tags. Meta tags are the unseen descriptions and keyword loggers found within the html coding of a web page, but not displayed to visitors. Search engines use your meta-description and meta-keywords tags to sort your web site. The description tag is the default text displayed by the search engine when you site is found by a searcher. The keywords tell the search engine what your site is about.

If you’re building your very first web site, it’s a good idea to use a web site building program, such as the All In One WordPress Plug-In. All you’ll have to do is type in the description and key words for your poker affiliate site, rather than coding the html yourself. And of course your key phrase should be used once in the description and again in the keywords. Do not use the key phrase more than once in the description – it’s considered keyword stuffing and can’t hurt rather than help your on-site SEO.

You can also use your key phrase in any images you use on the page. If you are putting up a screenshot of Full Tilt Poker, use the phrase in the ALT and/or TITLE tag.

There’s an excellent program called SEO Doc (http://www.instantposition.com/seotest.php) that will test your on-site SEO and give you results ranging from 1 through 5; 1 being “Unreliable” and 5 being fully “Optimized”. This is a free service that will give you a very good idea of how well your on-site SEO is working without having to wait for Google to re-index your poker affiliate site.

Full Tilt Poker Merit Cyprus Classic Day 2 update

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Day 2 of the Merit Cyprus Classic, the tournament now sponsored by Full Tilt Poker, saw 141 of the original 181 entrants take to the poker tables, and when all was said and done just 45 hopefuls remained in the running for the coveted championship at the conclusion of play — not to mention the sizable first-place prize-money generated by the €5,000 buy-in for the poker tournament!

Full Tilt Poker had high expectations for the tournament, which was previously a WPT stop, and despite a smaller than expected –or hoped for—turnout, the tournament has attracted a number of big names, and has gone off without a hitch. Hopefully a nice showing in Cyprus will be the impetus for Full Tilt to sponsor more tournaments, or dare I say it: A Poker Tour of their own?

At the top of the leader-board at the conclusion of Day 2 play was Manig Loeser, who is sitting on a 337,000 chip stack. Loeser still has a lot of fierce competitors to deal with amongst his 44 rivals, including top pros Bruno Steffanali, 2008 November Niner Kelly Kim, Full Tilt poker pro David Benyamine, Andrew Feldman, 2010 November Niner John Dolan, and Joe Cassidy.

Check back for more updates from the Full Tilt Poker Merit Cyprus Classic as Day 3 of the tournament is just about to get underway.
