2011 Aussie Millions Day 2 recap

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

The 276 players that returned to the Crown Casino poker tables on Wednesday for Day 2 of the Aussie Millions Championship almost burst the money bubble before play was called to a halt. However, in the end the field of 76 were still four places shy of the money, so it will be another night before the players know if their time in Australia will end in profits.

The big story of the day was the continued success of Team Full Tilt Poker, especially Patrik Antonius who finds himself in 9th place on the leader-board after winning a pivotal pot against his fellow team Full Tilt member Phil Ivey. Antonius was willing to risk his entire stack with an open-ended straight-flush draw, only to see Ivey turn over top-pair with the nut-flush-draw! Fortunately for Antonius his straight-draw hit and he scooped the massive pot, crippling Ivey in the process.

Here is a look at the Top 10 chip counts heading into Day 3 of the tournament:

1.    Randy Dorfman 581,000
2.    Michael Ryan 547,000
3.    Tobias Reinkemeier 533,500
4.    James Keys 508,500
5.    Sorel Mizzi 489,000
6.    Randy Lew 484,000
7.    Rene Freymann 434,000
8.    Haibo Chu 431,000
9.    Patrik Antonius 428,500
10.    Manny Rodrigues 365,000

Other big names still kicking include Team Full Tilt members Howard Lederer and Erick Lindgren, as well as Chris Moorman, Eugene Katchalov, and Mike Sowers.

Andrew ‘Foucault’ Brokos joins Team PokerStars Online

Monday, January 24th, 2011

One of the top online poker players in the world, Andrew Brokos, has just announced he is joining Team PokerStars Online, a collection of online grinders and up-and-coming pros who make their living mainly at the online poker tables –Basically the Team Online pros are highly successful players who have yet to crossover and have mainstream success in live tournaments and televised events.

Brokos plays online under the screen-name ‘Foucault’ and while mainly a cash game specialist; Brokos has also had quite a bit of success in poker tournaments, both live and online. Having surpassed the $1 million mark in career tournament earnings, coupled with his skills in the $5/$10 -$25/$50 No Limit Holdem cash-games makes Foucault an easy choice for a sponsorship deal.

His biggest score to date was winning the FTOPS $2,000 NLHE tournament in May, 2010 worth a massive $450,000. Brokos has also managed a very unique feat in his short poker career, made all the more impressive when you consider the very sparse live tournament schedule he plays: Brokos has cashed in four of the last five World Series of Poker Main Event tournaments –his best finish being a 35th place in 2008 for which he took home $193k!

Brokos joins a growing list of Team PokerStars Online players including Dusty ‘Leatherass’ Schmidt, Randy ‘nanonoko’ Lew, Grayson ‘SpaceGravy’ Physioc, and Kevin ‘WizardofAhhs’ Thurman among others.

$250k tournament to take place at Aussie Millions

Monday, January 24th, 2011

With the PCA Super-High-Roller tournament and now the Aussie Millions $100k Challenge tournaments both attracting larger than expected fields the Aussie Millions has decided to go forward with its plan to host a $250,000 buy-in tournament –the tournament will take place on January 27th.

Looking to reclaim the title of the most expensive poker tournament –the Aussie Millions was the first tournament series to host a $100,000 buy-in tournament in 2009—the $250k tournament will be a single table Sit & Go, and regardless of the number of entrants will be played as a winner-take-all event!

Likely participants in the tournament include Patrik Antonius, Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan, Daniel ‘jungleman12’ Cates, Phil Ivey, and possibly some of the other Full Tilt poker pros that are already down in Australia like Howard Lederer and Gus Hansen, and even Sam Trickett who just won the $100k Challenge tournament. It will be interesting to see if the tournament officials at the Aussie Millions will expand the tournament beyond one table if there is enough interest from the big stars in poker, and possibly a couple of big high-rollers like Masa Kagawa and other poker playing businessmen who are in town.

It’s still unclear if any PokerStars pros will take part in the tournament –the entire Team PokerStars Pro roster skipped the $100k Challenge, which was expected after Team Full Tilt declined to play in the $100k Super-High-Roller tournament at the PCA.

Prahlad Friedman set to host UBOC6 $1k Heads-Up Event

Friday, January 21st, 2011

UB Poker’s newest sponsored poker pro Prahlad Friedman is set to host his first tournament at the site, Event #13, a $1,000 buy-in No Limit Holdem Heads-Up Championship that will take place Saturday January 22nd, 2011 at 3PM EDT.

The tournament’s format and the hefty buy-in should attract a number of top poker pros, and UB Poker could start to see if signing Friedman –which brought more legitimacy to the site—will start reaping immediate benefits by bringing back many top pros to UB Poker.

Friedman signed with UB Poker in early January amidst much fanfare and controversy. Friedman was criticized by a number of players, most notably Daniel Negreanu, for signing with UB Poker due to its past track-record. Not only was Friedman victimized by the cheating scandal that took place on the site, but he was also a long-time advocate against poker sponsorships, which earned him the “sellout” tag from many 2+2 forum members and Negreanu.

Friedman joined UB Poker because he felt the time was right to become a sponsored player, and wanted to do more philanthropic work –a major point in his contract revolves around charity events and contributions—and felt this could best be accomplished by increasing his profile.

Additionally, by signing with UB Poker, Friedman is helping to usher in a new era at the site: Gone are the old owners, and longtime figureheads Annie Duke and Phil Hellmuth, even the site’s brand has been tinkered with, changing from Ultimate Bet to UB.

Isildur1 and jungleman12 square-off at PokerStars

Friday, January 21st, 2011

Perhaps the two biggest names in online poker at the moment are Daniel ‘jungleman12’ Cates and Viktor ‘Isildur1’ Blom, and the railbirds were treated to a long session of $50/$100 NLHE played between the two last night on PokerStars. The 2+2 poker forum quickly began a play-by-play analysis of the match in the January High Stakes Thread.

The two played roughly 2,500 hands over the 3-hour battle, and when all was said and done jungleman12 came out victorious to the tune of about $100,000. However, the real highlight of the match was the banter that took place after a particularly rough stretch by Isildur1. Blom is known to get a bit tilted while playing, and has a tough time holding his tongue in the chat-box, so it was unsurprising to see him blast jungleman12: “U so bad it’s embarrassing. How can you win so much money? Such a joke how you play. U win like 10 flips in a row.”

Obviously calling online poker’s biggest winner over the last year “embarrassing” is probably a bit overstated, and later it seems Blom realized he may come off looking foolish for such comments, so he followed up his early comments with: “I didn’t mean what I said before. U might be the best. I was just tilted at another thing, sry.”

Don’t expect this to be the last battle between the two, as Cates is on top of his game, and Isildur1 has never shown a propensity from “quitting” anyone!

PokerStars launches the Eureka Poker Tour

Friday, January 21st, 2011

True to their word of expanding to a dozen international poker tours, the popular online poker site PokerStars has announced its latest endeavor, the Eureka Poker Tour. The tour will feature stops in Eastern and Central Europe, but unlike the high-profile European Poker Tour –another PokerStars property—the Eureka Poker Tour will feature smaller buy-ins and take place at more off-the-beaten-path locales.

The tour has five scheduled stops at this point, all with €800 Main Events, in addition to calling the EPT Prague their Main Event –a move that will likely also boost attendance for that particular EPT stop! Prize-pools for the Main Events are expected to be in the neighborhood of €250,000, with attendance capped at 400-500 players depending on the locale.

Here is a look at the 5 stops that have been announced for the Eureka Poker Tour:

·    March 16th -20th: Czech Republic Prague € 800 Main Event
·    May 11th -15th: Slovenia Nova Gorica € 800 Main Event
·    June 22nd -26th: Bulgaria Golden Sands, Varna € 800 Main Event
·    September 7th -11th: Croatia, casino to be determined, € 800 Main Event
·    November (dates to be determined): Romania, casino to be determined, € 800 Main Event
·    December (dates to be determined): Czech Republic (EPT) Prague €5300 Main Event

The tournaments will also feature a number of preliminary events including satellite tournaments for as little as €20! For more details you can visit the Eureka Poker Tour website at www.eurekapokertour.com.

Doyle Brunson ponders leaving Las Vegas

Friday, January 21st, 2011

Judging by his most recent blog entry at Doyles Room it would seem that the Godfather of Poker, Doyle Brunson, is not overly impressed with the changes that are taking in the poker world. After returning from a trip to Costa Rica –where some are speculating he was meeting with representatives regarding Doyles Room leaving the Cake Poker Network and joining another network, possibly Cereus—Brunson had this to say on his blog:

“Las Vegas is becoming more and more a not very desirable place for a poker pro to live. There are simply isn’t very many high limit games anywhere. What’s with the economy, the world wide tournaments, and the internet poker, the outlook for live cash games are bleak. Poker is on the verge of making a very significant change and in my opinion very bad change.”

I understand what Doyle is hinting at here; that the usual high-stakes fish –players who just won a big tournament or had some other cash windfall—no longer have the down-time they used to, as they are off to the next tournament or spend their time playing online, instead of trying to take on Doyle and co. in the toughest cash-games in the world. In fact, these players rarely will sit down in these games without a television camera on them anymore, so the high-stakes action is drying up a bit –not to mention that the skill difference in poker has been decreasing over the past few years.

So where will Doyle land? “I’m considering moving to California; at least there are a few mid level games that are played regularly.”

New professional poker players’ league announced

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

After yesterday’s announcement we learned that the Palms Casino has teamed up with Federated Sports and gaming (FS+G) to create a new Poker League that will be an invite-only affair for top professional poker players. It was also announced that recently departed UB Poker Pro Annie Duke will be the commissioner of the league.

In what will likely feel like Déjà vu for many of us long-time poker enthusiasts, apparently the newly formed Poker League will attempt to do what the Professional Poker Tour (PPT) was unable to accomplish in its one season in 2005 –Sustain attendance while increasing the initial smallish prize-pools.

Just 200 players will be invited to compete in the four scheduled tournaments of the new tour which has yet to be named, and participants will be determined by a mathematical criterion that will award 2-year, 3-year, 5-year, and life time tour cards.

Using a very similar formula to determine participants, the PPT’s major hurdles included rather paltry $225,000 prize-pools, and paid just six competitors. Because of this, the tour lasted only a single year and the events were later incorporated into the World Poker Tour schedule. Perhaps the new tour will not be an absolute freeroll but a money added tournament series, which would create much larger prize-pools –If the tour uses a $5,000 buy-in format and doubles the prize-pool each event would feature a $2 million prize-pool, more than enough to attract the top players to each event.

Hopefully the involvement of Jeffrey Pollack, Annie Duke, and the Palms Casino –owned by the Maloof family—will help establish the tour as a major player in the poker world.
