Isildur1 up $1 million in one pay at PokerStars

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

After seeing almost his entire yearly profits disappear in the space of a single week, Viktor “Isildur1” Blom kept plugging away at the PokerStars tables, and this past weekend he went on one of the biggest heaters of the year for any online poker player, winning over $1 million in a 24 hour period.

Last week it was Isildur1 who was bleeding chips to fellow high-stakes pros Ilari “Ilari_FIN” Sahamies and Phil “MrSweets28” Galfond, but this past weekend Isildur1 would claim revenge on at least one of those players as $1.4 million came out of the PokerStars account of Ilari Sahamies and found its way into the account of Blom according to highstakesdb.com.

Sahamies and Blom are two of the swingiest players in online poker, so it shouldn’t be too big of a surprise that the pots get very big when the two clash, but $1.4 million is a very scarce number to be able to report on!

Of course, Blom isn’t one to take some time off after a big win and nearly $300k of his winnings has already found a home in other players’ accounts at PokerStars. Sahamies on the other hand decided it best to stop playing and write a blog about his struggles this weekend:

“Just finished the games against Isildur. Came down from $1.3 million in two days and felt really bad already when I was down $200k… Don’t know why I continued after $500k down. Really don’t know. I played weak and it was fair I lost my money,”

You can read Sahamies entire blog post at coinflip.com.

Vanessa Selbst critical of $1 million buy-in tournament

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

One thing I have learned in the poker world over the years is that regardless of the question you ask you will often receive multiple different answers, and this is precisely what happened when PokerNews.com asked some poker pros for their thoughts on the new $1 million buy-in tournament –a charity event that will see 11.11% of the prize-pool donated to Guy Laliberte’s charity ONE DROP—set to take place at the 2012 WSOP.

While many of the responses were positive, or at least tempered in their criticism, one poker pro decided to take the poker world to task over the new atmosphere of ultra-high-stakes buy-in tournaments, Vanessa Selbst.

Selbst told PokerNews.com, “I think it is ridiculous it completely destroys the sanctity of the bracelets. It completely ruins the idea of poker stats… I think $100k and $250k buy-in tournaments are stupid enough. High-roller tournaments are $25k, that’s enough…”

The Yale law student went on to make a political analogy, saying, “it is kind of what America is doing. It completely eliminates the middle class. It is the richer people who are able to play bigger buy-in tournaments and it artificially inflates their stats and they are recognized as the best players. It makes it that much more difficult for the lower buy-in players to break through.”

Selbst makes a terrific point in that these high-profile, exclusionary, tournaments only serve to keep the current crop of top players in the spotlight, but in the end it is all about what the players, fans, and promoters want to accomplish, and for the time being that seems to be to push the envelope in terms of stakes.

WSOP teams up with ONE DROP for $1 million buy-in tournament

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

We are about to find out just how much money some poker players are worth considering anyone willing to put-up the $1 million buy-in to take part in the recently announced THE BIG ONE for ONE DROP tournament has to be worth at least 10x that amount!

ONE DROP was formed by Cirque de Soleil creator Guy Laliberte, with the aim of providing access to clean water around the globe. 11.11% of each entry will be donated to the charity, which will raise millions by itself –then of course there will be the donations simply from the exposure the tournament brings.

The tournament is still a year in the offing and will take place from July 1-3, 2012, and should the registration list reach 22 players it will be considered an official WSOP bracelet event (with the winner receiving a Platinum Bracelet). Thus far nine people have confirmed their participation in the event. The current crop of competitors includes a mix of poker legends and poker-loving businessmen:

•    Guy Laliberte
•    Andy Beal
•    Phil Ruffin
•    Bobby Baldwin
•    Doyle Brunson
•    Patrik Antonius
•    Gus Hansen
•    Antanas “Tony G” Guoga

The tournament is an open event, but anyone with $1 million burning a hole in their pocket that wants to participate must put-up a $50,000 non-refundable deposit with complete payment due 14 days before the tournament.

PokerStars approaching 60 billionth hand milestone

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

As the world’s largest online poker room approaches the unprecedented milestone of 60 billion hands they have already started rewarding their players with some 300 million hands to go! Starting at 59,700,000,000 hands PokerStars will be awarding their players with special prizes and cash every million hands.

In order to be dealt into one of the 300 milestone hands that will occur throughout the 60 billionth hand promotion all you have to do is play at any PokerStars real-money table. PokerStars will be awarding around $1 million in prizes during the promotion, and should you be the lucky winner of the site’s 60-billionth hand you will receive at least –AT LEAST– $60,000 from the site!

Here is a look at how PokerStars will calculate the prizes awarded during the promotion according to the PokerStars.com website:

Players dealt into a milestone hand win a cash prize of $50 for every VIP Player Point (VPP) they earned in the previous 50 hands played on that table. All players dealt in will also receive a base prize of $50, and any player that wins a portion of the main pot will get their prize doubled!

·    Dealt into Milestone Hand: (# of VPPs in previous 50 hands x $50) + $50 = Cash Prize
·    Win Milestone Hand: (# of VPPs in previous 50 hands x $50 + $50) x 2 = Cash Prize

When the big 60 Billion Mega Milestone is reached, all players dealt in will be rewarded $500 for every VPP earned in the previous 50 hands (calculated same as above, including the base prize of $500 for all players dealt in). The winner of the Mega Milestone will also have their prize money doubled, and will also receive $60,000 on top – which means a grand total of tens of thousands of dollars!

·    Dealt into Mega Milestone: (# of VPPs in previous 50 hands x $500) + $500 = Cash Prize
·    Win Mega Milestone: (# of VPPs in previous 50 hands x $500 + $500) x 2 + $60,000 = Cash Prize

A player earning 1 VPP per hand in their previous 50 hands would therefore stand to make over $110,000!

Cates increases lead in durrrr Challenge after short session

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

For the first time since early January Daniel ‘jungleman12’ Cates and Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan were spotted at the high-stakes Full Tilt Poker tables partaking in the durrrr Challenge. Unfortunately for the railbirds who have been pining for action between the two online poker legends the session was extremely short, lasting just 348 hands –spread out over two short sessions due tro a break midway through the session.

At first it was durrrr who jumped out to a small lead, and held a $20,000 lead after about 240 hands. Then durrrr told Cates he would “brb” and when he did return to the tables Full Tilt Poker apparently threw the “Doom Switch” on one of its own, and durrrr just hemorrhaged money to Cates.

In the following 100 hands, Cates would turn that $20,000 deficit into a $122,000 win. The biggest pot –an $80k affair that the duo decided to run twice—would go Cates’ way when his two over’s and flush draw bested durrrr’s second pair and straight draw on both runs.

At the end of the session Cates had increased his lead in the durrrr Challenge to nearly $1 million, although there is still a lot of poker to be played before this one will be all said and done.

·    Total hands played — 17,456 of 50,000
·    Cates’ overall lead over Dwan — $941,263.50

5th Anniversary of Sunday Millions shatters record

Monday, March 7th, 2011

With a $5 million guaranteed prize-pool, and a cool million dollars guaranteed to the winner, we all expected the 5th anniversary of the Sunday Millions tournament to be one for the ages, but when the final tallies came in, I don’t think anybody expected these kind of numbers!

A total 59,128 players registered for the $215 tournament –that usually boasts a guaranteed prize-pool of $1.5 million—so the total prize-pool swelled to an astounding $11,825,600! This makes the Sunday Million 5th anniversary tournament the second largest prize-pool in online tournament history –falling just shy of the 2010 WCOOP Main Event which topped off at $12,215,000.

Not only will the winner of the Sunday Millions Anniversary tournament walk away with over $1 million ($1,655,629.38 to be precise) even the runner up will receive a $1,182,560 payday. The winner of the tournament will also receive the added bonus of a Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4.

The number of entrants nearly eclipsed PokerStars record-setting tournament back in July 2009 when 65,000 players entered a $1 tournament on the site: This time around the buy-in was $215 and PokerStars nearly attracted 60,000 players, making it the second largest tournament in online poker history both in terms of the overall prize-pool as well as the number of entrants –Absolutely astounding!

The first Sunday Million tournament was held on March 5, 2006 and was won by a player using the screen-name “aaaaaaaa”.

Isildur1 crushes urnotindangr for over $1 million

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

It took two days and two sessions, one of them a marathon affair that lasted 13 hours and saw the two play nearly 7,700 hands of high-stakes PLO, but in the past week, Viktor “Isildur1” Blom dominated Scott “urnotingdangr” Palmer at the PokerStars nosebleed tables to the tune of over $1 million.

The two players have been regular combatants since Blom signed with PokerStars, and typically their matches were very back and forth affairs –with one player winning one night, and then losing it back the next night. However, all that changed on Sunday and Monday night when Isildur1 not only won during the two consecutive sessions, he absolutely dominated Palmer, first for some $620,000 on Sunday, and another nearly $500,000 beat-down last night according to www.highstakesdb.com.

I’m not sure what kind of bankroll Palmer is playing with but the million dollar downswing has to hurt, even though he is still up over $600,000 according to highstakesdb.com when you combine his Full Tilt Poker results –UrnotINdanger2—of +$500,000 with his PokerStars results –urnotindangr—of +$100,000.

With Isildur1’s bankroll now growing, it will be interesting to see if he sticks to the $25/$50 and $100/$200 PLO tables on PokerStars or if he decides to bump up the stakes a bit. He has already shown a penchant for taking part in the $100/$200 games, which he was avoiding prior to his recent upswing. Isildur1 is now approaching the $1 million mark for the year as we head into March.

Brad Booth opens up about being cheated on UB Poker

Friday, February 25th, 2011

In a follow-up to last week’s show that saw Travis Makar talk for the first time about his role, and his knowledge, in the Ultimate Bet Poker Super-User scandal the Cold Call Show at DonkDown Radio brought on Brad Booth, who was allegedly one of the most exploited poker players in the Super-User scandal.

Booth’s story was heart-wrenching, and literally explained the extent of the damage done to some players by the scandal. Booth detailed how after he was brutally cheated out of some $2 million on the site, he would borrow money and then lose that, and even went on such life-tilt that he began betting on sports and other self-destructive behavior.

Booth went so far as to detail a day when after he took a bath at the UB Poker tables, Russ Hamilton called him up –after cheating him out of money—and offered to lend him money, which would keep him playing, and of course losing that borrowed money to Russ Hamilton!

He also outlined how some of the accounts he played on at the time –and was cheated on—were closed down so he was unable to receive a settlement from those accounts, which he claimed was over $1 million. Booth also describes smashing five or six laptops and borrowing money from many poker players.

So not only did Booth get cheated out of millions of dollars, the UB scandal basically ruined his life, which he is now trying to put back together –he stated he still has around $120,000 in debt he needs to pay off.

Annie Duke poker league talking to CBS

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Variety.com is reporting that the Annie Duke/Jeffrey Pollack professionals-only poker league that is being backed by Federated Sports and Gaming is in discussions with the CBS network to broadcast the first season of the tournament series. Variety cites “sources” saying CBS has been in early discussions about televising the new poker tour, although when contacted CBS had no official comment on the matter.

Last week the still unnamed poker tour announced the dates of the first four tournaments that will take place, along with a $1 million freeroll tournament after the season, where only the top 27 players from the tour will receive an entry. The tournaments will be played at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada which is owned by Gavin Maloof, one of the investors in the pro poker league.

The tour’s not so original idea –remember the Professional Poker Tour from around 2005ish– is to have a points system similar to the PGA or ATTP tours for golf and tennis, and only invite the top 200 players to the tournaments. The plan thus far is to feature a $20,000 buy-in Main Event with some type of overlay to entice the top poker players to attend the tournaments.

Each stop will also feature a “Pro-Am” tournament with a $1,500 buy-in where the top 9 finishers receive an entry into the Main Event –the $180,000 in Main Event entry-fees will be deducted from the prize-pool of the Pro-Am—as well as a Charity tournament of some sort.

Blair Hinkle big winner in FTOPS XIX Main Event

Monday, February 21st, 2011

With a record setting field the winner of the Full Tilt Poker FTOPS XIX Main Event was looking at a $1.3 million payday, but with so much money on the line a deal at the end was inevitable, and it was the runner-up, Blair “blur5f6” Hinkle who would be the newly minted millionaire, despite losing the heads-up battle to a player using the screen-name “GIAMPP”.

The FTOPS XIX Main Event was a $600 buy-in tournament that sported a $3 million guaranteed prize-pool, but thanks to the Multi-Entry format the number of entrants swelled to an astounding 14,479, with a prize-pool that topped $8.6 million!

Hinkle, a 2008 WSOP champion, entered the final table with the chip-lead, and despite dropping back to the middle of the pack was able to hold on until a deal was discussed during three-handed play, that saw Hinkle use some major powers of persuasion to lock up a $1+ million score.

Despite GIAMPP holding the chip-lead, Hinkle would not deal unless he took home the Lion’s Share of the prize-pool, and it seems that his two opponents, GIAMPP and SirMad, were not willing to risk winding up with 3rd place money and took the deal. By accepting the deal both players were able to guarantee themselves an additional $170,000+ over the structured third place payout.

Here is a look at the final table payouts for the FTOPS XIX Main Event –the largest prize-pool in Full Tilt Poker history:

1.    GIAMPP – $877,950
2.    Blair “blur5f6” Hinkle – $1,162,950
3.    SirMad – $805,440
4.    Nayza – $451,745
5.    WiLDmAn75 – $321,434
6.    J NOCK – $230,216
7.    425wedabest – $165,061
8.    beerocrat – $121,624
9.    Colonel Mustard – $86,005
