As the chip-leader heading into the final table of the 2011 $25k WPT Championship, Galen Hall is apparently trying to lock up the Card Player Magazine and BLUFF Magazine Player of the Year Awards before the year is even half over. Hall, who won the PCA Main Event in January, would become the first player in history to win two of poker’s most prestigious tournaments in the same year if he can outlast Scott Seiver, Justin Young, Freddy Bonyadi, Roger Teska, and Tony Gargano at Friday’s final table.
Seiver, who is one of poker’s rising stars in both tournaments and cash games, trails Hall by just 20,000 chips heading into the televised final table is looking for his first major tournament title since winning a WSOP bracelet in 2008.
In previous years both Seiver and Hall would be eyeing not just the prize-money for winning the WPT Championship, but a likely sponsorship deal to boot. Unfortunately for both players, Black Friday has made US poker pros expendable to online poker sites. Should either Hall or Seiver win the title they will likely have lost out on a very lucrative sponsorship deal –just another effect of the US crackdown on online poker.
Here is a look at the final six players’ chip-counts and seating assignments heading into Friday’s final table:
Seat 1: Galen Hall — 5,095,000
Seat 2: Justin Young — 1,750,000
Seat 3: Tony Gargano — 3,550,000
Seat 4: Roger Teska — 3,600,000
Seat 5: Scott Seiver — 5,075,000
Seat 6: Freddy Bonyadi — 2,470,000

There was a very interesting change to the Full Tilt poker software this week, as the second largest online poker room in the world added Ring Game Tickets to their store merchandise. Players can now purchase tickets that can be used to buy into cash games at Full Tilt Poker from the site’s FTP and Iron Man Stores.
Players can purchase Ring Game Tickets worth $10, $25, $50, and $100 respectively. Obviously there is a catch, but it’s not all that bad: In order to release your Cash Game ticket into your regular Full Tilt Poker account you must clear a certain number of Full Tilt Poker Points while playing on your ticket –basically the Ring Game Tickets function as a bonus that is given up front, but cannot be cashed out until it’s cleared.
Here is a look at the threshold that must be surpassed in order to clear each ticket:
· $10 Ticket – 250 FTP’s
· $25 Ticket – 625 FTP’s
· $50 Ticket – 1,250 FTP’s
· $100 Ticket – 2,500 FTP’s
· $200 Ticket – 5,000 FTP’s
There are a number of stipulations and guidelines that have been implemented with the Ring Game tickets which you can read more about at the Full Tilt Poker website.
Overall, the Ring Game Tickets seem like a very nice addition to the Full Tilt Poker store, and should garner a very favorable reaction from Full Tilt Poker players –the only real issue I see with the details is that your ticket will expire if you fail to play on it for 7 days; which seems kind of quick to me.

ESPN.com features a ranking system of the world’s Top 10 players as voted on by some of the biggest personalities in the poker media, so instead of the purely mathematical formulas of Bluff Magazine and Card Player Magazine, ESPN’s rankings have a little more nuance to them, taking into account cash-game play and some other factors.
While the top half of the list remains unchanged there was some major shakeup occurring at the 6-10 spots. So here is a look at ESPN’s The Nuts rankings for January 2011.
1. Phil Ivey
2. Jason Mercier
3. Tom Marchese
4. Tom Dwan
5. Vanessa Selbst
6. Sorel Mizzi (Was #9)
7. John Juanda (Was #6)
8. Daniel Negreanu (Unranked last month)
9. Eric Baldwin (Was #8)
10. Erik Seidel (Unranked last month)
Obviously The Nuts panel places a heavy emphasis on poker tournaments, as we see players like Patrik Antonius, Daniel Cates, and Phil Galfond not on the list. The most notable absence in my mind would have to be Sam Trickett, is there a poker player who has had more success in all three arenas over the past 6-months than Trickett? Online, Live cash-games, and Live tournaments.
I also have a hard time understanding the love for Jason Mercier; Mercier is obviously a terrific tournament player, but #2 ahead of Dwan, Marchese, and Selbst?

One of the top online poker players in the world, Andrew Brokos, has just announced he is joining Team PokerStars Online, a collection of online grinders and up-and-coming pros who make their living mainly at the online poker tables –Basically the Team Online pros are highly successful players who have yet to crossover and have mainstream success in live tournaments and televised events.
Brokos plays online under the screen-name ‘Foucault’ and while mainly a cash game specialist; Brokos has also had quite a bit of success in poker tournaments, both live and online. Having surpassed the $1 million mark in career tournament earnings, coupled with his skills in the $5/$10 -$25/$50 No Limit Holdem cash-games makes Foucault an easy choice for a sponsorship deal.
His biggest score to date was winning the FTOPS $2,000 NLHE tournament in May, 2010 worth a massive $450,000. Brokos has also managed a very unique feat in his short poker career, made all the more impressive when you consider the very sparse live tournament schedule he plays: Brokos has cashed in four of the last five World Series of Poker Main Event tournaments –his best finish being a 35th place in 2008 for which he took home $193k!
Brokos joins a growing list of Team PokerStars Online players including Dusty ‘Leatherass’ Schmidt, Randy ‘nanonoko’ Lew, Grayson ‘SpaceGravy’ Physioc, and Kevin ‘WizardofAhhs’ Thurman among others.

Judging by his most recent blog entry at Doyles Room it would seem that the Godfather of Poker, Doyle Brunson, is not overly impressed with the changes that are taking in the poker world. After returning from a trip to Costa Rica –where some are speculating he was meeting with representatives regarding Doyles Room leaving the Cake Poker Network and joining another network, possibly Cereus—Brunson had this to say on his blog:
“Las Vegas is becoming more and more a not very desirable place for a poker pro to live. There are simply isn’t very many high limit games anywhere. What’s with the economy, the world wide tournaments, and the internet poker, the outlook for live cash games are bleak. Poker is on the verge of making a very significant change and in my opinion very bad change.”
I understand what Doyle is hinting at here; that the usual high-stakes fish –players who just won a big tournament or had some other cash windfall—no longer have the down-time they used to, as they are off to the next tournament or spend their time playing online, instead of trying to take on Doyle and co. in the toughest cash-games in the world. In fact, these players rarely will sit down in these games without a television camera on them anymore, so the high-stakes action is drying up a bit –not to mention that the skill difference in poker has been decreasing over the past few years.
So where will Doyle land? “I’m considering moving to California; at least there are a few mid level games that are played regularly.”

Along with the signing of Isildur1 PokerStars also announced they would be creating a series of special challenge matches allowing other PokerStars pros and high-stakes players on the site to take on the mystery man from Sweden who has set the online poker world on fire since late 2009.
Today PokerStars has confirmed Isildur1’s first opponent in what it is calling the Superstar Showdown: Fellow PokerStars Pro Isaac Haxton.
According to the PokerStars blog: “On December 19 at 6pm ET, Haxton and Isildur1 will face off at four $50/$100 no-limit hold’em tables. On the line is $150,000 apiece over 2,500 total hands. The match, one of a series known as the SuperStar Showdown, will be played in public on PokerStars for everyone to watch.”
Haxton, who goes by the name philivey2694 on PokerStars, and Isildur1 will both be coming to the match with $150,000 of their own money on the line; in addition to whatever profits the winner of the match takes from his opponent, PokerStars will also kick in an additional $10,000.
Haxton burst onto the poker scene with a runner-up finish in the 2007 PCA Championship, and since then has proven to be one of the top young poker players in the world; whether he is playing cash games or tournaments, live or online. This should be a very interesting matchup to say the least!

Bwin’s Ongame network recently announced they have signed three new partners to their Italian Poker network. The new partners boost the liquidity of the network even further and the three new operators are expected to be completely functional on the network over the next few months. The operators will be migrated to the P5 Poker Engine.
MatchGames, TOBS and Casino Italia are the latest additions to the Italian Poker Network. The addition of these operators brings the Ongame Italian network partners to ten. “Ongame Network’s Italian operation is in an exciting expansion phase and demonstrates the business benefits of being a responsible supplier who works within legal jurisdictions,” said Martin Lerby, Head of Ongame Network.

These partners include Fast Poker, Gioco Digitale, Gmatica and Sportingbet Italy.
The P5 Poker Engine currently offers players Sit & Go’s as well as multi-table poker tournaments and scheduled games. They also offer other gambling games such as bingo. Poker cash games will also be provided as long as regulations allow.
