German crowned 2011 World Series of Poker Champion

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

After one of the fiercest and hotly contested heads-up matches in World Series of Poker history, 22 year-old Heinz Pius became the second youngest player to ever win the WSOP Main Event, and the first German to capture the title (Henry Nowakowski is the only other German to reach the final table, which he did in 2001).

After Sunday’s action that saw Pius, Martin Staszko, and Ben Lamb reach Tuesday’s final three, most people expected the heads-up battle to be contested between Pius and Lamb, but Staszko decided to crash the party and proved to be more than the other two players could handle. In fact, Staszko and Lamb would tangle on the very first hand of the night, moving all-in pre-flop. The hand would leave Lamb crippled, with just over 10 Big Blinds in his stack, while Staszko would moved up to challenge Heinz Pius who controlled 50% of the chips in play at the start of the night.

Staszko would take over the chip lead on Hand 2 of the night, and would eliminate Lamb on hand 4. Once Lamb was eliminated the Staszko vs. Heinz duel lasted over 100 hands and saw the chip-lead change hands eight times before Pius Heinz was able to dispatch Staszko (who to virtually everyone’s surprise, turned out to be something of a heads-up specialist).

1. Pius Heinz — $8,715,638

2. Martin Staszko — $5,433,086

3. Ben Lamb — $4,021,138

4. Matt Giannetti — $3,012,700

5. Phil Collins — $2,269,599

6. Eoghan O’Dea — $1,720,831

7. Badih Bounahra — $1,314,097

8. Anton Makiievskyi — $1,010,015

9. Sam Holden — $782,115

Isildur1 up $1 million in one pay at PokerStars

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

After seeing almost his entire yearly profits disappear in the space of a single week, Viktor “Isildur1” Blom kept plugging away at the PokerStars tables, and this past weekend he went on one of the biggest heaters of the year for any online poker player, winning over $1 million in a 24 hour period.

Last week it was Isildur1 who was bleeding chips to fellow high-stakes pros Ilari “Ilari_FIN” Sahamies and Phil “MrSweets28” Galfond, but this past weekend Isildur1 would claim revenge on at least one of those players as $1.4 million came out of the PokerStars account of Ilari Sahamies and found its way into the account of Blom according to highstakesdb.com.

Sahamies and Blom are two of the swingiest players in online poker, so it shouldn’t be too big of a surprise that the pots get very big when the two clash, but $1.4 million is a very scarce number to be able to report on!

Of course, Blom isn’t one to take some time off after a big win and nearly $300k of his winnings has already found a home in other players’ accounts at PokerStars. Sahamies on the other hand decided it best to stop playing and write a blog about his struggles this weekend:

“Just finished the games against Isildur. Came down from $1.3 million in two days and felt really bad already when I was down $200k… Don’t know why I continued after $500k down. Really don’t know. I played weak and it was fair I lost my money,”

You can read Sahamies entire blog post at coinflip.com.

2010 Champ Duhamel going strong in $1k NLHE at WSOP

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

After two Day 1 starting flights that saw over 4,000 players register for Event #8, the $1k No Limit Holdem tournament at the 2011 WSOP, the remaining 624 players returned to the Rip on Monday for Day 2 of the event. As the day wore on, and many of the big name players were eliminated one player who is being closely watched at the 2011 WSOP managed to not only survive but thrive, and that player was 2010 WSOP Main Event Champion Jonathan Duhamel.

Duhamel managed to end the day with 250,000 chips, which although it might be well behind chip-leader Jon “PearlJammer” Turner, it puts Duhamel just outside the Top chip counts, and in prime position to make a move on Day 3 of the tournament.

Duhamel has the chance to become the first WSOP Main Event champion to win a bracelet the following year since Chris Ferguson won the 2000 Main Event and the $1,500 Omaha 8 or better tournament at the 2001 WSOP.

Here is a look at the Top 10 chip counts heading into Day 3 of the $1k NLHE tournament:

1.    Jon Turner – 749,000
2.    Kyle Speake – 573,000
3.    Hunter Frey – 535,000
4.    Sadan Turker – 487,000
5.    Brandon Shane – 482,000
6.    Christopher Goggin – 464,000
7.    Young Ji – 425,000
8.    Stuart Krasney – 385,000
9.    Daniel Haglund – 301,000
10.    Valerie Cross – 297,000

Allen Bari finally breaks WSOP losing streak

Monday, June 6th, 2011

Allen Bari may not be the most well-known poker pro –not to mention he is a quite polarizing figure amongst his peers in the poker world—but his abilities at a poker table have never really been called into question. Which is why it was surprising that Bari, who has been playing tournaments since 2004, had never won a WSOP bracelet.

Bari found himself the massive chip-leader heading into the final day of the $5k NLHE tournament with just four players remaining –Bari had over 9 million chips while his opponents had less than 4 million chips combined! Although Bari was never seriously challenged, at one point Sean LeFort did chip-up to over 4 million chips before being eliminated in 3rd place, leaving Maria Ho to battle Bari’s huge chip-stack in heads-up play.

After the win the Twitterverse was mixed with some congratulations –many containing a slight needle of some sort—as well as scorn for Bari, who doesn’t seem to have a filter at the poker table and rubs many people the wrong way. Here is a look at a Tweet from Lex Veldhuis that pretty much sums it up:

The world just got a little angrier. @allenbari won a bracelet. Congrats bro. Fuck happy people. And please don’t smile in your bracelet pic

Here is a look at the final table payouts from the tournament:

1.    Allen Bari — $874,116
2.    Maria Ho — $540,020
3.    Sean LeFort — $348,128
4.    Nicholas Blumenthal — $255,028
5.    Thomas Ross — $189,574
6.    Ricky Fohrenbach — $142,821
7.    Jesse Chinni — $108,914
8.    Mikhail Lakhitov — $84,033
9.    Farzad Bonyadi — $65,535

Daniels falls short at WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

The WPT is still in search of its first female champion after Abbey Daniels was eliminated in 4th place at the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown Main Event. Daniels entered the final table in third place overall and even managed an early double-up before being ground down and eventually eliminated by Curt Kohlberg.

Daniels would have become the third female player to win on the WPT, but would have been the first to win in an “official” “open” event: Natalia Nikitina recently won on the WPT Regional Series in France, while Van Nguyen won the WPT Celebrity Invitational back in 2008.

It was an up and down day for eventual champion Taylor Von Kriegenbergh who managed to increase his massive chip-lead early on, only to stumble and lose the chip-lead for a spell, before absolutely demolishing the competition to win the title. How hot was Von Kriegenbergh? By the time he reached heads-up play against Curt Kohlberg, Taylor had amassed over 11 million chips compared to Kohlbergh’s 1.8 million!

Here are the final table payouts from the inaugural WPT Seminole Hard Rock:

1.    Taylor Von Kriegenbergh – $1,122,340
2.    Curt Kohlberg – $586,109
3.    Justin Zaki – $415,680
4.    Abbey Daniels – $286,819
5.    Allen Bari – $211,997
6.    Tommy Vedes – $166,272

The WPT will next be in Las Vegas for the Season 9 Championship from May 14-20 at the Bellagio, followed by the first-ever WPT Super High-Roller Championship which will take place on the 18th and 19th of May.

Familiar names at the top of EPT Berlin leader-board

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

Day 1b of the PokerStars European Poker Tour Berlin Main Event is now in the books and a couple of recent champions find themselves near the top of the chip counts heading into Day 2: Vladimir Geshkenbein who won the EPT Snowfest last month, and Roberto Romanello who wrapped up the WPT Bratislava tournament earlier this month; both men ended Day 1 with over 150,000 in chips.

A total of 773 players registered for the EPT Berlin Main Event this time around –well off last year’s 915 entrants—creating a total prize-pool of €3,865,000, with €825,000 sitting by, waiting to be awarded to the winner of the tournament.

Last year’s EPT Berlin was marred by the brazen daylight robbery that took place on the final day of the event, but this time around the players should feel much suffer inside Berlin’s Spielbank Casino instead of a nearby Hotel Ballroom.

353 players will return to the Spielbank Berlin on Thursday for Day 2 of the tournament, but they are still quite a way from the money as only the top 120 players will cash in the tournament.

Here is a look at the chip-leaders from Day 1a and 1b heading into Day 2 of the EPT Berlin:

1.    Sander Berndsen — 242,900
2.    Oleg Elkin — 210,000
3.    Cristian Dragomir — 205,500
4.    Jochanan Robert Flink — 203,400
5.    Alek Samardzic — 200,200
6.    Mayu Roca Uribe — 190,000
7.    Max Heinzelmann — 186,400
8.    Aurelien Guiglini — 182,600
9.    Vladimir Geshkenbein — 181,500
10.    Ben Wilinofsky — 180,500

WSOP adds interesting wrinkle to 2011 schedule

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

The World Series of Poker is adding a very intriguing wrinkle to this year’s tournament series with the creation of WSOP Rematches, pitting the final two players from select tournaments in a heads-up rematch that will be filmed by ESPN.

Two of the first three matches we will be graced with are a couple of the most infamous heads-up duels in WSOP history:

·    Chris Moneymaker vs. Sam Farha from the 2003 WSOP Main Event
·    Phil Hellmuth vs. Johnny Chan from the 1989 WSOP Main Event

The third rematch will be voted on by the fans through the WSOP Facebook page, with the following choices available:

·    1988: Johnny Chan vs. Erik Seidel
·    2004: Greg Raymer vs. David Williams
·    2006: Jamie Gold vs. Paul Wasicka
·    2010: Jonathan Duhamel vs. John Racener

Each match will be played in a best-of-three format, with the first match recreating the exact scenario the two players found themselves in down to the chip and blind-level. The second match will see the chip-stacks reversed, while the third round match will see each player start with an equal amount of chips.

The WSOP Rematches will take place during the 2011 World Series of Poker, and will take place on June 2, 2011. The matches will air on ESPN as a two-hour special on July 26th, complete with footage from the original showdown and interview segments with the participants.

Hachem and Ramdin headline The Big Event final table

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

The original field of 417 players has been pared down to just the final table of eight at the PokerStars NAPT Los Angeles Bug Event taking place at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles, California, and it’s two big name poker pros who will be headlining the final table in Victor Ramdin and 2005 WSOP Champion Joe Hachem.

Ramdin will come into the final table in second place after holding the chip-lead for most of the tournament; meanwhile Hachem will bring an above average stack to the final table as well, and has been lurking just below the leaders for most of the tournament.

Ramdin lost the chip lead late on Day 4 to Jeremy Ausmus who went on a tear at the tail-end of the day eliminating players and swelling his chip-stack to over 4 million when all was said and done.

The final table of The Big Event will get underway at 1Pm local time on Thursday. Here is a look at the seating assignments and chip counts for the Main Event:

·    Seat 1: Govert Metaal — 149,000 chips
·    Seat 2: Taylor von Kriegenbergh — 1,810,000 chips
·    Seat 3: Santiago Nadal — 943,000 chips
·    Seat 4: Jeremy Ausmus — 4,008,000 chips
·    Seat 5: Brian Leskowitz — 1,087,000 chips
·    Seat 6: Joe Hachem — 1,666,000 chips
·    Seat 7: Jose De Noronha — 568,000 chips
·    Seat 8: Victor Ramdin — 2,279,000 chips

Man drinks 42 beers and manages to keep his poker face

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

And in this week’s edition of Bizarre Poker Stories I present you with the disturbing, later turned comical, tale of an Australian casino-goer who managed to down 42 beers during a 17 hour poker session! The incident took place at the Star City Casino in Sydney, Australia, during New Year’s Eve and into the early hours of New Year’s Day.

After bringing the man some five beers an hour for the better part of a day, a number of casino employees have been fired or demoted, as well as the Star City Casino being handed a $10,000 fine for violating the Australian law that states casinos are not permitted to offer gambling games to a player who is intoxicated.

According to one casino employee, they didn’t notice anything was amiss until the man tried to leave his seat: “He didn’t appear to be steady on his feet. He was dozing off at the table and the manager had to help him collect his chips so he could cash them in,” Helen Mikhael-Ghanime told the press.

The story turns comical when the Star City Casino staff explains the reasoning behind serving a player 42 beers:

“The nature of poker is that players tend to be …very controlled in their facial expressions and body movements. This level of control means that many of the visible signs that a person…is affected by alcohol may be minimized.”

Now that is a poker face!

Isildur1 victorious in the PokerStars Superstars Showdown

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

After taking one on the chin against fellow Team PokerStars Pro Isaac Haxton in the first Superstar Showdown, Isildur1 came back strong against Party Poker front-man Tony G this past weekend, ending the 2,500 challenge match $44,000 in the black.

Tony G and Isildur1 battled across four online poker tables (2 PLO and 2 NLHE) and as anticipated the match was a very up and down affair, with both players willing to stick their chips in the middle at virtually any moment –In fact the two players were all-in six times in the first 20 or so minutes of the match!

Initially it was Tony G who was dominating play –and the chat-box—as he quickly went up some $50,000 at which point he started needling the young Swedish poker pro:

Tony G: u feeling ok my man
Tony G: u getting owned by a total donk old man
Tony G: start pressing sme all in buttons boy
Tony G: are you even
Tony G: QUALIFIED
Tony G: are you COMI to this

And after another all-in win Tony G went back on the attack in the chat-box:

Tony G: LOL

Tony G: u donk

Tony G: get a hand
Tony G: ure a farse
Tony G: tyhere ges another bank rlll down the drain
Tony G: LL
Tony G: i control u like a baby

After this things went completely downhill for Tony G who couldn’t seem to win an all-in confrontation after this point. At one point Isildur1 had erased his entire deficit and gone up some $80,000, before Tony G battled back to pull nearly even. However, a late all-in pot when to Isildur1 and the mystery man from Sweden booked an impressive win of $44,200.
