While the World Series of Poker and Partouche Poker Tour were restarting their final tables another major tournament was beginning over the weekend in Amneville, France. A very impressive field of 542 players entered the World Poker Tour’s latest stop and when the smoke cleared it was Swiss poker pro Sam el Sayed who captured the title, along with the €426,425 in prize-money that was awarded to the winner.
Sayed came to the final table with the chip-lead and facing off against a bevy of hometown Frenchmen all looking to win the tournament for France. However, after being knocked down to the short-stack at one point it looked as though Sayed’s run was about to end. When all was said and done Sayed was able to hang on and survive as the short-stack before he was able to rebound and not only regain his chip-lead but win the WPT Amneville title.
Sayed, a fixture on the European poker tournament circuit is now over $900,000 in career tournament earnings, with this result easily eclipsing his previous best –in fact it’s double his previous career earnings!
Here is a look at the complete final table results from the WPT Amneville tournament:
1. Sam El Sayed €426,425
2. Franck Pepe €229,613
3. Ilan Boujenah €161,550
4. Nesrine Kourdourli €109,886
5. William Bresson €79,545
6. Jean-Paul Pasqualini €62,323
7. Julien Robert €46,743
8. Georges Chehade €34,442

Since the French government has brought in new gambling legislation there have been many operators entering the country as well as leaving the country. Gambling operators have to apply for a new license now due to the new regulations and they also have to comply with legal processes that are tougher than most areas in the UK. The latest operator to leave the country is the 888 brand.
888 recently announced that they will stop all gaming in France which includes poker and bingo. The company will cease operations in France on July 11th. The company is planning on returning to the area once they have the proper operating licenses.
888 announced in a recent press release that they have applied for a license in France and they took immediate action so they can fully comply with the new regulations in the country. Those who do not get a proper license could face prosecution if they are caught operating without a license. Those who want to gamble in France must do so on sites with French gaming licenses.

The month of April has been a good month for poker players in France. The country has moved to legalized online gambling throughout the country. The move was introduced to try and shut down the black market of online gaming by creating an alternative that is legal.
After the bill was approved in France, a flurry of deals were signed between media outlets and online gaming sites. Ladbrokes and Canal+, Mangas Gaming and the M6 Group of France are just a few of the companies cutting deals.
The most recent deal was signed between PartyGaming and the French television broadcaster the AB Groupe. This deal comes right after PartyGaming signed a deal with Pari Mutuel Urbain. The AB Groupe has over fifty million of paid subscribers in France and other French speaking countries.
The new deal will see the two groups combining their talents to create a new poker room called LuckyJeux. The new poker room will be on the PartyGaming on their French poker network. The AB Groupe will be promoting the new poker room on their television and online network.
Jim Ryan the CEO of PartyGaming made a statement after the deal was announced: “AB Groupe is a first rate addition to our French poker network and is consistent with our stated strategy of combining B2C and B2B offerings in newly regulated markets. Together with our recently announced alliance with PMU, we are in great shape ahead of the market opening and are excited about our prospects”

The State monopoly of internet gambling has come to an end in France. The French Parliament met and passed a bill recently which will legalize and regulate horse racing, sports betting and poker online. Privately owned international websites will now be able to offer platforms in the French market.
The bill got the majority of parliament votes, 299 to 223. The bill should come into effect right before the World Cup in South Africa which is set to take place in June. Those who are opposed to the bill are expected to try and have the law overruled by the Constitutional Court but for right now gamblers in France are quite happy.
Francois Baroin the Budget Minister commented in The Daily Telegraph: “This text will allow us to progressively dry up the black market in online gambling by creating a legal offer which obeys the rules.” The new bill will make private operators get a permit from a regulator who will then make sure the games meet regulations that are enforced by the State. Minors will also be permitted from gambling online and reinforce measures that target illegal gambling sites.
Once the bill is signed into law the state will be taxing 7.5% on all sports bets while a 2% tax will be placed on online poker bets. Part of the percentage taken from the bets will go toward gambling addiction campaigns.
The two organizations available in France that are state run are PMU and La Francaise des Jeux. These two operators will now have stiff competition with other operators moving into the area. Many are already benefiting from France opening up online gambling to other markets. Metropole 6 Group the second most watched television network in France recently struck a deal with Mangas Gaming a French online gambling group.
The deal was made last Thursday and is a four year deal. The deal will see Mangas subsidiaries Everest Poker and Betclic to offer betting services on M6 websites. They will also be sponsoring poker and sports offerings on M6’s digital channels.
With the French gambling market opening up to international providers we are sure to see many more deals like this one to take place. Many operators are looking forward to moving into the French market and it will definitely be good for the industry.

PartyGaming is a major player in the gambling industry, as a gambling affiliate, you’ve no doubt heard of them, especially in Europe. The company recently announced a plan to launch their online poker product into France after signing an exclusive multi-year deal with PMU, a pari-mutuel horse racing company in France. PartyGaming will be working with PMU to create a new site for France.
The two companies agreement will see PartyGaming working with partners to create a PMR branded online poker client. The new client will retain their own poker software but will also use PMU’s player account systems.
Once PMU and PartyGaming have gained a French gaming license, the new poker service will become available. the new site will give players access to PartyGaming’s French poker networks including PartyPoker. PMU which stands for Pari Muteuel Urbain is a large horse racing company in France and with both the knowledge and experience of PMU and PartyGaming, the new site is sure to be a hit.
The French online gaming market just recently opened to outside operators and the area is looking to be very lucrative for many of the existing casinos and poker companies. Though the opportunity is high, the number of clients applying for a license to operate in the country has been quite low. But since PartyGaming is getting involved in the area it looks as though more and more operators will join the band wagon and move into the area as well.
Jim Ryan, Chief Executive Officer of Party Gaming commented on the deal when it was announced by stating: “Today’s agreement with PMU is consistent with our stated strategy of securing a small number of high value partners in regulated markets. PMU is widely recognized as one of Europe’s leading betting businesses and we look forward to providing them with a world class poker service.”
