France is Europe’s new poker hotspot

Saturday, February 12th, 2011

Europe has a new leading man when it comes to major poker tournaments, as it has become readily apparent that France, not the United Kingdom, is the top draw in Poker. This shift in the power structure came off of news that France will be the host of the World Series of Poker Europe after luring the coveted tournament series from London to Cannes.

In the press release issued by the owners of the World Series of Poker brand, Caesar’s Entertainment, they explained the decision to move the WSOPE thusly: “[Caesars Interactive Entertainment] has been looking for a strategic opportunity to enter the French market after seeing for years the interest of French poker players at the WSOP event in Las Vegas increase. By signing an offline and online alliance with the same group, Caesars now has the ability to tap into this terrific market in a meaningful manner.”

France now plays host to a number of high-profile tournaments throughout the year including:

·    Two World Poker Tour Events
·    Two European Poker Tour Events
·    The Partouche Poker Tour Grand Finale
·    The World Series of Poker Europe

It was also announced that the 2011 WSOP Europe would be expanded to seven events –there were five in 2010—and will be held at the Casino Barrière de Cannes Croisette and the Hôtel Majestic Barrière, in Cannes, France from October 7th to the 21st,2011.

888 to leave French Gambling Market

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Since the French government has brought in new gambling legislation there have been many operators entering the country as well as leaving the country. Gambling operators have to apply for a new license now due to the new regulations and they also have to comply with legal processes that are tougher than most areas in the UK. The latest operator to leave the country is the 888 brand.

888 recently announced that they will stop all gaming in France which includes poker and bingo. The company will cease operations in France on July 11th. The company is planning on returning to the area once they have the proper operating licenses.

888 announced in a recent press release that they have applied for a license in France and they took immediate action so they can fully comply with the new regulations in the country. Those who do not get a proper license could face prosecution if they are caught operating without a license. Those who want to gamble in France must do so on sites with French gaming licenses.

BetClic Poker and Everest Poker Launch in France

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

As the online betting market in France has been liberalized many online poker sites are moving into the area. Two large poker rooms recently announced they are now offering services in France. Everest Poker and BetClic Poker are the most recent rooms to be licensed in the area.

Both BetClic Poker and Everest Poker are owned by Mangas Gaming and GigaMedia, and the owners decided to move into France. GigaMedia is a large part of the online gambling industry as they provide online entertainment software, services, development of software as well as licensing. The site also operates online gaming businesses.

GigaMedia CEO Arthur Wang commented: “We are especially excited about the opening of the large French market to online poker. Everest and BetClic are strongest in France and we see an enormous market opportunity for which we are best positioned with our award winning poker products.”

This announcement came just after the first site launched in France. The first site to get started in the country was Bwin. As the area has opened up more and more providers are moving into the area and the coming weeks should see even more news of online poker rooms and gambling operators becoming licensed and starting operations in France.

ARJEL Issues first of many French Gambling Licenses

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

ARJEL a French gaming regulator has issued the first of many gambling licenses to come in the country. ARJEL has issued seventeen gambling licenses to eleven operators which marks the official liberalization of the French gambling market.

The issuing of the licenses comes just days before the World Cup begins in South Africa so operators will be busy getting ready to take bets on the various events of the World Cup. The licenses granted will cover three areas: horse racing, organized sporting events betting and online poker, according to a decree that was published in the Official Journal.

Those who received a license for sporting bets or football betting from ARJEL will be able to start offering their services as soon as this Tuesday or Wednesday which will be just in time for the World Cup. Online poker offerings will begin at the end of the month.

The opening up of the French gambling market ends hundreds of years of the states monopoly on gambling. The monopoly was set in place by King Francois I back in 1539, so this is a major milestone in the country of France.

Hollywood Poker to no longer accept French Players

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Hollywood Poker recently announced they will no longer be able to support new French players. Because of the pending enforcement of new gambling laws in France the site has made this decision. Hollywood Poker also announced that the network they use, Ongame will also be blocking French players from their network in the coming weeks.

Hollywood Poker has ceased new traffic from France and players from France will be blocked from creating a new account and any Hollywood Affiliates who send French players to the site will not be compensated. Poker Networks Sign French Deal

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Two of the Internets major poker networks have announced they have signed a deal to create a new online poker network in France. Both 888 and Microgaming Poker Network are going to be moving into the market as it opens up in France for non-state providers. The market is expected to welcome outside operators in the next few months.

The new poker network will be a joint venture between the two poker networks 888 and Microgaming and it will host both Dragonfish and Microgaming licensees as well as 888’s current players. The network will also accept future players from France.

Several online poker companies have signed deals to move into the French market once it opens up to outside operators. PartyGaming and CyberArts are just a few of the companies that have signed deals in the past few months.

The Chief Executive officer of 888, Gigi Levy, commented on the deal by stating: “This deal marks a turning point in the industry with big networks collaborating in newly regulated markets to create a shared pool of liquidity, benefiting customers and assisting in rapidly generating large poker networks in each market.”

Microgaming CEO Roger Raatgever also commented on the new deal by stating their company is excited to be working with 888 to create the poker solution for the French market. Microgaming is looking forward to combining their experience and knowledge with 888 to bring ‘the highest global standards to the local market.’

Paradise Poker and Betfair Sportsbook Leave French Gambling Market

Monday, May 17th, 2010

As the French poker market is opening up to outside operators many gambling operators are getting ready to move in by setting up shop in the area or signing deals with other companies. Surprisingly a few companies are moving out of the French Market.

Both Betfair and Sportingbet, online bookmakers with strong poker sites, have moved out of the French market which will soon be regulated. Betfair released a statement which read that the company is critical of the licensing process in France and they have yet to decide if they are going to apply for a license because the French Authorities have yet to publish the full set of license requirements.

The director of European public affairs for Betfair, Tim Phillips, commented: “We are looking very hard at the French market and how we might operate within the new licensed regime. Though it’s not impossible for a newcomer to create a commercially viable business, most projections show it will be very difficult to do so, given the proposed restrictions imposed on license holders.

French legislation will certainly benefit the incumbent players and the ultimate loser will be the French consumer. The new law does not adequately open the former monopoly’s market to true competition from other operators. We hope that the review, scheduled 18 months from now, will amend the law to address these flaws.”

Paradise Poker’s owner Sportingbet commented on their French website that they would no longer be allowing French players to play or bet at their site stating that it was their legal obligation to suspend activities. This took place on May 13th.
