Rich Muny new PPA Vice President of Player Relations

Monday, June 6th, 2011

With a couple of spots to fill after both Howard Lederer and Chris Ferguson resigned their posts as Poker Players Alliance board members in the wake of Black Friday, the grassroots organization turned to one of their own and promoted from within last week when they made Rich “TheEngineer” Muny the new Vice President of Player Relations.

Muny, who was already a PPA board member and also headed up the Kentucky arm of the PPA as a State Director, will now act as in intermediary of sorts between the PPA and the poker community as a whole, working with the poker blogs, forums, and media to get the PPA message out and answer any questions players may have.

In a statement posted on the 2+2 poker forum, John Pappas wrote:

Washington, DC (June 2, 2011) – The Poker Players Alliance, the leading poker grassroots advocacy group with more than one million members nationwide, announced today that Rich Muny will serve as Vice President of Player Relations for the Board of Directors of the PPA.

“Through the years Rich has worked with the PPA, his passion for the game of poker and staunch devotion to protecting poker players’ rights has proven unparalleled,” said former Senator Alfonse D’Amato, chairman of the PPA. “Given the growing concerns within the poker community over their inability to play online poker in the U.S., now more than ever, American players need to know their voice is being heard and I believe Rich offers the level of expertise needed to reinforce their calls to action.”

A member of the PPA Board of Directors since 2007, Rich also served the alliance as the PPA Kentucky State Director, tirelessly advocating for poker players’ rights. In his new role, Rich will serve as the liaison between the PPA and the poker blogs, forums, social networking sites as well as some traditional poker media outlets.

Prior to his work with the PPA, Rich made a living at the tables as a professional poker player. Incited by the 2006 passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), Rich made the decision to devote his time to advocate for poker players’ rights and has been working diligently with the PPA ever since.

Before becoming a professional poker player, Rich honed his project management and problem solving skills working as a mechanical engineer for GE Aviation, a skillset that has served him well both in his poker game and in his role with the PPA. His thorough understanding of the game of poker and passion for upholding its future in the U.S., has spurred him to help motivate and organize like-minded poker enthusiasts to campaign for poker rights. He regularly communicates directly with the player base on several online forums under his online handle “TheEngineer” and via phone calls and emails.

“The strength of the PPA greatly depends on the voice of its membership and Rich has proven to be an outstanding representative of poker players, not only in his home state of Kentucky, but from across the country,” said John Pappas, executive director of the PPA. “As an avid poker player himself, Rich is truly ingrained in the issues and understands the frustration players feel around the current legislative challenges to online poker in the U.S. I can’t imagine anyone more suited to directly communicate with our membership and I look forward to working with him to ensure this country establishes a licensed and regulated environment so players can enjoy this great game in any format they choose.”

Muny’s new role in the PPA has been a long time coming, as the organization’s biggest weakness has always been in conveying a clear message regarding their goals and ongoing lobbying efforts; hopefully Muny will be able to keep the poker world informed on the PPA’s day-to-day operations as well as answer any questions from the community.

Chairman of PPA releases statement after yesterday’s rally

Friday, May 28th, 2010

As we recently reported, the PPA held a rally yesterday morning outside of the Washington State Supreme Court Room to try and get the attention of the court. A law was recently passed that classifies playing online poker as a Class C Felony. The PPA met yesterday to try and get the law changed.

Oral arguments were heard yesterday in the case of Rousso v. State which is referring to Lee Rousso the PPA director of Washington State. Rousso has stated that the new law is unconstitutional as it makes individuals felons for playing online poker.

The statement read:

“The PPA is pleased that the Washington State Supreme Court agreed to hear this case, and today’s arguments have provided the court compelling reasons to reverse this ridiculous law. Washington is the only state in America that makes its citizens felons for enjoying a game of poker – even penny ante games – on their own computers in their own homes.  This law is not about the legislature protecting the state’s citizens, but rather it is about protecting special interests and tribal casinos from competition.  In fact, a recent poll of Washington voters found that almost 80 percent of voters oppose this law. The court of public opinion has spoken and now the state Supreme Court must strike down this unconstitutional and invasive law.

“I was amazed by the turnout of poker players who joined us this morning on the steps of the Supreme Court to support Mr. Rousso’s case.  These Washington poker enthusiasts are doctors, lawyers, auto mechanics and school teachers, not hardened felons.  The Poker Players Alliance is grateful that the local poker community is so dedicated, and I hope local lawmakers know that these voters care deeply about their freedoms.

“The PPA looks forward to working with Washington’s state and federal lawmakers, regardless of outcome in this case, to establish effective licensing and regulation of online poker as opposed to criminalizing citizens for playing the game.”

PPA Marching Washington Today

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

The Poker Players Alliance is still working hard to try and get online poker legalized for US citizens. The Poker Players Alliance met today outside of the Washington State Supreme Court building at 10:00 am to fight a gambling law that was recently enacted by the state.

Lee Rousso the PPA director of Washington State is trying to talk the State Supreme Court into overturning the law that makes playing online poker a Class C felony. The game of poker is now considered the same as a child pornography or heroin charge.

Rousso has stated that the law amounts to protectionist legislation for the in-state gambling interest. Rousso has stated that this is not legal as it is in violation of the Commerce Clause of the Constitution in the United States.

Several members of the PPA are attending the meeting today including Phil Gordon and Alfonse D’Amato the PPA Director and a former New York Senator. D’Amato commented that the law is shocking and players should not be considered felons for playing poker online in their own homes.

The PPA has encouraged their members to attend the rally in support of changing the bill and hopefully this movement will help turn the State Supreme Court in the right direction. A change would be in favor of online poker and hopefully it would be a step in the legalization of online poker in the US.

Hungary’s Gambling Laws Hurting Poker Players

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

On May 1st 2010 Hungary amended their Gambling Act of 1991 and it has hurt the poker community of the country. The new poker law has hurt the poker industry as many poker club owners have been forced to shut down their operations and players have had to play at foreign poker card rooms.

The Gambling Act of 1991 was created to allow the government to have control over the country’s gambling facilities. They also had the ability to redirect poker players away from the poker clubs they prefer to casinos.

Back in December Draconian laws were passed on a Parliamentary bill which defined poker as gambling. This negatively affected the poker industry as poker players and casinos are now subject to taxes which makes the game not as profitable as it could be.

Poker players must now pay 30% taxes on any poker winnings and casinos and poker clubs must follow strict restrictions. These restrictions include a 15% limit on profits as well as a 30% tax on their revenues. If any person breaks these laws they could be subject to large fines as well as a prison sentence.

Hungary currently prohibits online gambling sites from operating inside their country but poker players have moved to playing the game of poker at foreign owned poker sites online to avoid paying the heavy taxes the new law is enforcing.

Since the current law seems to be working against the government of Hungary, the country is looking to create more laws to try and rein in the industry. The Fidesz Party of Hungary is supposedly thinking about creating a country wide ban of online gambling and it seems as though Erik Banki the Chairperson of Sports and Tourism is in agreement with the ban.
