The Epic Poker League has been in the news quite a bit this week, first for finally giving the poker league a proper name after months of being referred to as the Annie Duke Poker League or the FS+G Poker League, followed by the soft launch of their website, www.epicpoker.com, and now the announcement that the Deepstacks Live team will be hosting a poker seminar prior to the debut tournament of the Epic Poker League.
The 1-Day Advanced Tournament Course will take place on July 9th, 2011 at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada and will feature such names as Annie Duke, Adam Levy, Randal Flowers, Justin “Boosted J” Smith, Mike “The Grinder” Mizrachi, and Mike Matusow. All of the instructors have earned their Epic Poker League tour card –except for Duke who refused her card to avert any conflict of interest as the league’s commissioner—including Matusow and Mizrachi who both received a 5-year exemption due to their stellar careers.
The course has a cost of $500, but there are plenty of freebies that will offset much of the cost to the player. Players attending the 5-hour training session will also receive an entry into a $180 Epic Poker League Pro/Am satellite tournament, a copy of Annie Duke’s new poker book, Decide to Play Great Poker, a “Grinder Knot” charity bracelet, as well as a buffet meal ticket.
For more information on the seminar head on over to www.deepstacksuniversity.com

Sorel Mizzi announced the launch of a new charity called Poker Players Against Poverty, which seeks to help alleviate homelessness and poverty. According to a press release issued on Thursday: “With Sorel in the lead, Poker Players against Poverty will recruit other like-minded poker players who will commit service days and percentages of their tournament winnings in the fight against poverty.” Mizzi has committed 5% of his future tournament earnings, as well as a one-time $10,000 donation.
When you mention the name Sorel Mizzi in the poker world you will likely elicit a number of responses, some good, some bad, some indifferent, and some very, very bad. At the forefront of a number of cheating and ethical scandals in his brief poker career, as well as his propensity to make these matters worse by his 2+2 posts, Mizzi is one of the most polarizing figures in the game with his detractors calling him a liar, cheater, and all around POS, and on the other hand his supporters will claim he is simply misunderstood and there is no proof to many of the allegations.
Mizzi, the 2010 BLUFF Magazine Player of the Year is considered one of the top tournament poker players in the game, and has proven his abilities in both live tournaments and online poker tournaments, however it his reputation that has taken a hit over the past few years beginning with a 3-year ban from Full Tilt Poker –as well as a shorter ban on PokerStars—for multi-accounting and buying another player’s account late in a tournament. Mizzi has also been implicated by John Racener in a Chinese Poker cheating scandal where Racener accused Mizzi of dealing off the bottom of the deck.

It’s been a tumultuous year for the Cake Poker Network; first was the launch of the Phil Laak brand, Unabomber Poker, which was an instant hit thanks to Laak’s following in the poker world. However, this was followed by the loss of two of their top sites PlayersOnly and SportsBook, which saw the Cake Poker Network plummet in traffic from a top 10 contender to nearly out of the top 20 according to pokerscout.com. Since this time the Cake Poker Network has been working overtime to improve its brand.
The first step in the network’s resurgence was luring one of the top new poker rooms away from the Everleaf Poker Network, Victory Poker. Victory Poker boasts a stable full of young poker talent including Antonio Esfandiari, Andrew Robl and David “TheMaven” Chicotsky, not to mention their high-profile CEO –who recently made the WSOP Europe Main Event final table—Dan Fleyshman.
Now the Cake Poker Network has added yet another poker room, Poker King. Poker King is an Asian-based poker room and online gaming site that features a number of unique features such as live online dealers.
With the addition of more and more fresh, unique, poker rooms we could see the Cake Poker Network resume its quest to become a Top 10 online poker network, and from there only the sky is the limit.

Ultimate Bet has once again changed altered their affiliate link structure. This announcement means that all Ultimate Bet (UB) affiliate links will need to update their tracking links as soon as possible. The new Ultimate Bet links will be displayed as follows:
New Ultimate Bet Affiliate Link Format: http://www.ub.com/?ubAffilID=XXXXX
Old Ultimate Bet Affiliate Format: http://www.ultimatebet.com/?ubAffilID=XXXXX
Here’s an excerpt from a recent UB.net email:
As you know, UltimateBet was recently rebranded UB.com. The revitalized brand means more excitement for the passionate poker player and there’s a lot in store for affiliates too.
Kind of looks like the company just decided to change the drapes, and cost affiliates thousands of dollars in the process? It’s sort of like a coupon for UB right? Save thousands of dollars redecorating, get the cash from affiliates!
How does this effect you? It could mean the loss of thousands of dollars. Links that have been placed in guest blogs, article submissions, etc are just null and void as of now, free traffic to UB. All affiliate links that are not changed to this new format by …. are just free traffic to Ultimate Bet.
The launch of the UB name as a brand comes with creative updates to banners, SEO changes and updates to your links as well. It is important to note that all references, text, and text links MUST be changed from UltimateBet.com to UB.com.
Chipleader didn’t announce the last date that the old trackers will track. We’ve emailed for clarification.

Real Deal Poker is an online poker site that uses new technology called Cut N Shuffle and Game Check systems. The site is owned by the Gioia International Limited Company and they recently announced that they have received a gaming license from the Isle of Man.
It took seven weeks after the application had been filed for the group to earn the license. The site uses real cards in its Cut N Shuffle system instead of the standard random number generators.

At the recent Global iGaming Summit and Expo, Bob Rybak a spokesperson for the Atlantic Lottery, stated that the Lottery, Loto Quebec and British Columbia Lottery have completed the creation stage of a shared online gambling and poker platform. Rybak commented that the platform should be ready to launch later this year.
Rybak went on to outline the future of online poker and gambling in the country during the expo. Those attending the expo found out that Manitoba and Ontario are also going to offer poker but they are a little further behind with launch dates.
Rybak commented that about $800 million was spent by Canadians last year online and the majority of the money was going offshore. The provinces of Canada would like to see the majority of the money coming to them so they worked together to create the large network to serve online gamblers in Canada.
Rybak also commented that the public would need to see that operators are going to keep underage player from accessing the platform before they would give their blessing. However some critics are not convinced that the operators will be able to keep young kids from accessing the site. Shane Simpson a gambling critic stated: “internet gambling is potentially the most problematic for people who have gambling addictions…and yet the government is expanding there without offering any other support.”
Simpson stated that the new platform will be marketing itself to a younger audience who would benefit from gambling on the go. The young people would also have access to the new platform via their mobile devices.

Cake Poker is a leading online poker provider in the gambling industry and they recently announced they are testing a new poker client. The new poker client has been anticipated by many in the industry and Cake Poker is currently testing the new client in a private beta.
Lee Jones the Card Room Manager for Cake Poker has worked hard to get the client to the beta stage and he had this to say: “We are excited to launch the private beta for our new Cake Poker client and to get some further feedback on our efforts. We are delighted at how the client is currently operating and looking forward to being able to offer an improved online poker experience to all our players.”
The new poker software will see many changes made to the Cake Poker website. Some of the new features include a new lobby that stretches both vertically and horizontally, a multi-field sorting system that is like Excel as well as an advanced filtering for detailed game/tournament choices.
The new software also provides direct registration for tournaments as well as a tournament lobby that links to satellites. Tables have been scaled down to the industry standard minimum size and the chat box detaches for a player to manage in a separate window. Players can also customize their card backs as well as the table felt and carpet.
To create the new poker client the software developers at Cake consulted with cash and tournament players to try and make the needed and wanted changes. Once the new software has gone through the private beta the software will be ready for launch in a public beta. Once the public beta launches, players will be able to use it in parallel with the existing client for a short period of time. During the testing phase, Cake Poker will still be taking player feedback and integrating it into the new client.
