Ben Lamb takes over Card Player Magazine POY race

Monday, November 21st, 2011

On the strength of his 3rd place finish in the 2011 World Series of Poker Main Event Ben Lamb has a very good chance of becoming the first player to ever win the World Series of Poker Player of the Year award and the Card Player Magazine Player of the Year award in the same year.

With the 2,400 points Lamb earned for his WSOP Main Event finish, he has now passed Chris Moorman for the Card Player POY lead with 6,036 points –although Moorman is not too far behind with 5,875. Lamb is also in 2nd place on the Bluff Magazine POY Leader-Board trailing Eugene Katchalov by a tally of 1,077.38 to 988.10.

Other big movers from the 2011 WSOP Main Event final table included Champion Pius Heinz, who vaulted into 12th place, runner-up Martin Staszkowho is now in 29th place, and 4th place finisher Matt Giannetti who moved up to 31st place with the help of his WSOP finish and his recent win at the WPT Malta.

Here is a look at the current top 10 in the race for the 2011 Card Player Magazine Player of the Year Award:

  1. Ben Lamb: 6,036 points
  2. Chris Moorman: 5,875 points

Titan Poker pro Trickett captures Partouche Poker Tour Championship

Monday, November 14th, 2011

After a two-month delay (a la the World Series of Poker) the Partouche Poker Tour Main Event final table participants were back in action this past weekend, with the €1 million first-place prize-money on the line, and what a final table it was!

With a log-jam at the top of the leader-board entering play, Team Titan Poker’s Sam Trickett found himself leading the field, but not by very much. And with the likes of 2011 WSOP bracelet winner and POY candidate Oleksii Kovalchuk, French poker star Roger Hairabedian, Alexander Dovzhenko, and Mads Wissing still in the running, the Partouche Poker Tour title was within any player’s grasp.

That said, Trickett would prove to be too much for the rest of the table, and even a 2-to-1 chip disadvantage during heads-up play was not enough to keep the UK poker pro out of the winner’s circle. The win was the third score of the year for Trickett that totaled over $1 million in prize-money (the other two coming in high-roller events at the Aussie Millions) and his $4.5 million in tournament earnings for the year is starting to approach Erik Seidel territory!

Here is a look at how the final nine players finished at the 2011 Partouche poker Tour final table:

  1. Samuel Trickett — €1,000,000
  2. Salman Behbehani — €600,000
  3. Oleksii Kovalchuk — €379,760
  4. Ilan Boujenah — €300,000
  5. Roger Hairabedian — €230,000
  6. Alexander Dovzhenko — €190,000
  7. Mustapha Kanit — €160,000
  8. Alexandre Coussy — €130,000
  9. Mads Wissing — €100,000

POY races heat up as poker year enters home stretch

Monday, August 29th, 2011

With the World Series of Poker effectively in the books –the WSOP Main Event is still undecided of course—a number of players have positioned themselves for the Player of the Year titles handed out by both Card Player Magazine and BLUFF Magazine.

This is usually the point on the poker year where a handful of players put some distance between themselves and the rest of the pack, in what I refer to as the “London Leg” of the poker schedule –although with the WSOP Europe moving to Cannes this year I’ll have to spend some time coming up with a new name for this part of the tournament schedule!

Here is a look at the Top on both the BLUFF and Card Player leader-board, through August 24th, 2011:

BLUFF Magazine Player of the Year Race leader-board:

  1. Eugene Katchalov — 924.38
  2. Bertrand Grospellier — 892.00
  3. Marvin Rettenmaier — 823.82
  4. Maxim Lykov — 820.56
  5. Samuel Stein — 775.25
  6. Galen Hall — 762.45
  7. Erik Seidel — 761.51
  8. Ali (Shahryar) Eslami — 758.39
  9. Jason Mercier — 757.43
  10. Phil Hellmuth — 681.25

Card Player Magazine Player of the Year Race leader-board:

  1. Sam Stein — 4,334
  2. Galen Hall — 4,284
  3. Maxim Lykov — 3,876
  4. Chris Moorman — 3,875
  5. Jason Mercier — 3,749
  6. Ben Lamb — 3,636
  7. Erik Seidel — 3,567

WSOP POY contender Ben Lamb leads heading into Day 3

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

At the end of Day 2b of the 2011 World Series of Poker Main Event a familiar name has maneuvered his way to the top of the leader-board, and will head into Day 3 on Thursday as the overall chip-leader, Ben Lamb.

Lamb, who is one of the handful of players who has a legitimate shot of running down Phil Hellmuth for the 2011 WSOP POY award, already has a WSOP win and runner-up finish on his 2011 WSOP resume, not to mention an 8th place finish in the $50k Players Championship and a 12th place showing in the $10k NLHE 6-Max Championship.

Lamb will head into Day 3 with 551,600 chips, and along with fellow poker pro Kevin Saul was the only player to crack the 500,000 chip-mark; Saul ended the day with 542,200. Another well-known poker pro who had a fantastic Day 2b was Patrik Antonius who finished the day with 361,000 chips, good enough for 7th place on the day, and just outside the top 10 overall.

Here is a look at the chip-leaders from Day 2a and Day 2b combined:

1.    Ben Lamb – 551,600
2.    Kevin Saul – 542,200
3.    Aleksandr Mozhnyakov – 478,600
4.    Ryan D’Angelo – 462,300
5.    Tuan Vo – 434,500
6.    Guillaume Darcourt – 410,500
7.    Narendra Banwari – 404,800
8.    Nicolas Fierro – 403,000
9.    Stephanie Albertini – 400,100
10.    Martin Torheim – 385,000

All of the players will now have Wednesday off before returning to the Rio on Thursday, which will be the last time that both the Amazon and Pavilion rooms are full of players.

2011 World Series of Poker POY race

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

With the world Series of Poker switching to the BLUFF Magazine formula for its Player of the Year award the competition is a lot closer than in years past where a mere two or three players would be in contention for the award. This time around, even after 40 tournaments in the books the top of the leader-board is extremely tight, and there are upwards of 50 players still within striking distance of the leader.

The new POY formula uses a baseline very similar to the old WSOP formula, but has the added wrinkle of two multipliers: One for the field size, and one for the amount of the buy-in. Another change in the formula has to do with the Main Event, which is no longer treated like any other bracelet tournament. Although the Main Event doesn’t offer multipliers like the preliminary events, it starts out by awarding 5-times the number of points as preliminary tournaments.

The final piece of the new formula is the inclusion of the WSOP Europe tournaments into the POY award. So now we will see the POY race carry over all the way to the WSOP Europe, and possibly to the Final Table of the Main Event in November.

Here is a look at the current POY leader-board courtesy of www.wsop.com:

1.    Phil Hellmuth — 420.75 points
2.    Samuel Stein — 402.63 points
3.    Mikhail Lakhitov — 401.80 points
4.    Mitch Schock — 364.81 points
5.    John Juanda — 336.00 points
6.    Amir Lehavot — 330.75 points
7.    Sean Getzwiller — 325.00 points
8.    Jason Mercier — 323.45 points
9.    Mark Schmid — 317.75 points
10.    Steve Landfish — 317.70 points

Seidel poised for another High Roller victory

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Having made it to Day 2 of the WPT $100k Super-High-Roller tournament it looked like Erik Seidel’s reign of supremacy in $100k buy-in tournaments was about to come to a close, but barely through a single level on Day 2 there was Seidel shooting up the leader-board. And now with the tournament on break until 12:30PM on Friday, there is Seidel, preparing himself to battle Erick Lindgren heads-up for another Super-High-Roller title in 2011!

Whether he wins or loses the heads-up battle against his fellow Team Full Tilt poker Pro, Seidel will surpass the $5 million mark in tournament winnings for the year, and we haven’t even gotten to the World Series of Poker yet!

Seidel will take a sizeable chip advantage into Friday’s heads-up duel, as he holds a 7,120,000 to 4,480,000 edge over Lindgren –although both players have plenty of room to maneuver with the blinds and antes at 40k/80k with a 10K ante.

With a total of 29 entries, five players managed to cash in the tournament, with the unfortunate bubble-boy being Cary Katz, who walked away -$100,000 while 5th place finisher Justin Bonomo’s min-cash was worth $224,160 –probably one of the biggest bubble discrepancies of all-time considering it’s a difference of nearly $325,000!

Here is a look at the payouts for the Super-High-Roller tournament:

1st Place: Undetermined $1,092,780
2nd Place: Undetermined $700,500
3rd Place: Daniel Negreanu $448,320
4th Place: Vivek Rajkumar $336,240
5th Place: Justin Bonomo $224,160

Galen Hall leads remaining 15 players at WPT Championship

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

What a year it has been for Galen Hall at the poker tables. The young pro started 2011 off by winning the PCA Championship (worth $2.3 million), and he has also final tabled the €25,000 buy-in High-Roller tournament at the EPT Grand Final in Madrid as well as finishing runner-up in the Champion of Champions tournament there. Now Hall finds himself sitting at the top of the leader-board at the $25k WPT Championship with just 15 players remaining.

With a win in the WPT Championship Hall would vault to over $4 million in prize money won in 2011, before we even close the book on May! However, getting to the final table, let alone winning the WPT Championship, will be no simple task considering the remaining players are virtually all top poker pros.

Standing in Hall’s way are such talents as Scott Seiver, Steven Kelly, Ashton Griffin, Daniel Alaei, and 2010 WPT Championship winner David Williams. You can expect a stacked final table, as 13 of the remaining 15 players are instantly recognizable names in the poker world.

Here are the chip counts for the remaining 15 players in the 2011 $25k WPT Championship taking place at the Bellagio:

1.    Galen Hall — 3,438,000
2.    Sam El Sayed — 2,774,000
3.    Roger Teska — 2,194,000
4.    Scott Seiver — 2,001,000
5.    Shannon Shorr — 1,786,000
6.    Steven Kelly — 1,674,000
7.    Tony Gargano — 1,577,000
8.    Ashton Griffin — 1,474,000
9.    Nenad Medic — 1,282,000
10.    Justin Young — 1,249,000
11.    Freddy Bonyadi — 700,000
12.    David Peters — 633,000
13.    Daniel Alaei — 530,000
14.    Will Failla — 393,000
15.    David Williams — 318,000

Gomes has eyes on Triple Crown at EPT Grand Finale

Friday, May 13th, 2011

What a way it would be for Team PokerStars Brazil’s Alex Gomes to join Gavin Griffin and Roland de Wolfe as poker’s only Triple Crown winners should he go on to win the PokerStars EPT Grand Finale in Madrid today –The Triple Crown requires a player to win an EPT, WPT, and WSOP title. Gomes captured a WPT title in 2009 at the Bellagio Cup as well as winning a WSOP bracelet in a $2,000 NLHE event at the 2008 WSOP.

Gomes finds himself near the bottom of the leader-board entering the final table, but as we saw on Day 4 of the tournament, anything can, and usually does happen! With 24 players remaining Andrew “azntrackr” Li found himself at the bottom of the chip-counts, but a few early double-ups landed the Supernova Elite player at PokerStars amongst the chip-leaders for the rest of the day.

A second Team PokerStars Pro also made the final table, Juan Macerias. The Spain native will obviously be the favorite amongst the hometown crowd, and I can only imagine what the celebration will look like should he go on to win the EPT Grand Finale!

Here is a look at the each player’s chip-count heading into the final day of play in Madrid, Spain:

1.    Ivan Freitez — 5,995,000
2.    Juan Maceiras — 3,150,000
3.    Andrey Danilyuk — 2,645,000
4.    Eugene Yanayt — 2,420,000
5.    Torsten Brinkmann — 1,875,000
6.    Alex Gomes — 1,670,000
7.    Tamas Lendvai — 1,655,000
8.    Andrew Li — 1,210,000

Young stars rise to the top on Day 2 of EPT Grand Finale

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

Day 2 of the PokerStars EPT Grand Finale in Madrid, Spain saw a number of poker’s up-and-coming young stars end the day in the Top 10 on the leader-board. Among the players who surged to the top of the leader-board were Full Tilt Poker Red Pro Melanie Weisner, recent EPT Berlin winner Ben “NeverScaredB” Wilinofsky, and William Reynolds. Joining the young stars in the Top 10 is longtime pro Victor Ramdin, who has been having a sensational 2011 tournament season thus far.

Day 2 came to a close on Monday with the money bubble being burst, so all of the remaining players are guaranteed at least €15,000 for their efforts at the EPT Grand Finale, but now that the players no longer have to worry about going home empty-handed I’m quite certain that virtually every player remaining has their eyes on the €1.5 million first-place prize.

Here is a look at the top 10 chip counts heading into Day 3 of the EPT Grand Finale:

1.    Ole Kristian Nergard — 726,000
2.    Kristoffer Thorsson — 701,500
3.    Daniel Weinman — 676,000
4.    Hugo Lemaire — 658,000
5.    Melanie Weisner — 543,500
6.    William Reynolds — 541,500
7.    Jose Nadal — 533,500
8.    Ben Wilinofsky — 533,000
9.    Simon Higgins — 517,500
10.    Victor Ramdin — 494,500

Day 3 of the EPT Grand Finale will get underway at noon local time on Tuesday, where the field of 104 players will be pared down to just 24 players by the end of the day.

Abbey Daniels looks to become first female WPT champion

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

There have actually been two female champions in the long history of the World Poker Tour, but both of those wins are accompanied by asterisks: First in 2008 the wife of Men “The Master” Nguyen, Van Nguyen won the WPT Celebrity Invitational in 2008 –key word INVITATIONAL—and earlier this year Natalia Nikitina took home an ‘open’ WPT event in Paris, but the Regional Series tournament is not considered a full-fledged WPT event and therefore also doesn’t count.

But there is a new hope for that first WPT female champion in the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown, as Abbey Daniles has weaved her way through a very tough field to the final table of six players.

Daniels is heading into the final table right in the thick of things with over 2-million in chips, putting her in third place on the leader-board, but she’ll definitely have her work cut out for as she goes up against chip-leader Taylor Von Kriegenbergh, Curt Kohlberg, Tommy Vedes, and Allen Bari. One player she will no longer have to worry about is WSOP bracelet winner Blair Hinkle, who was eliminated in 7th place just shy of the televised final table.

Here is a look at the chip counts of the final six players at the inaugural WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown:

1.    Taylor Von Kriegenbergh — 4,384,000
2.    Justin Zaki — 2,197,000
3.    Abbey Daniels — 2,192,000
4.    Allen Bari — 1,984,000
5.    Tommy Vedes — 1,570,000
6.    Curt Kohlberg — 655,000
