More details emerge in James Bord vs. John Juanda altercation

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

Day 1 of the 2011 World Series of Poker saw a number of all-in confrontations, but perhaps the biggest confrontation of all came during a break in the $25k Heads-Up Championship when Full Tilt Poker Red Pro James Bord confronted Team Full Tilt member John Juanda, and according to people on hand launched into a verbal tirade that ended with a warning/threat.

According to pokerstrategy.org.uk Bord was heard laying into Juanda, saying, “You’re a thieving prick,” “you’re a disgrace,” and “you’re a fake and disgusting human being”. At this point security had taken notice, but it wasn’t until Bord fired off his final tirade that they intervened. When Bord’s insults turned to threats, the two players were separated by security; according to several sources Bord said, “If I see you in the parking lot, I’m going to beat your ass,”

Apparently the threat caused Juanda some concern as he told security he felt threatened by Bord, but not enough to affect his poker playing considering he won his second round match to advance to Wednesday’s third round. He was however rattled enough to take the threat seriously enough that after winning his second round match in the Heads-Up Championship, Juanda left the Rio with security in tow; perhaps fearing that Bord would make good on his threat in “the parking lot”.

There is no word yet on whether the verbal altercation stems from the current issues with Full Tilt Poker cash-outs, or if it possibly stems from a rumored incident in Macau.

Isildur1 takes down another Superstar Showdown opponent

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Viktor “Isildur1” Blom may struggle with some aspects of being a high-stakes online poker pro –as his wild bankroll swings can attest to—but one thing is for certain; Isildur1 is definitely one of the best heads-up No Limit Holdem players in online poker as his now 7-1 record in the PokerStras Superstar Showdown matches attests to.

Blom’s latest opponent was his second online qualifier from PokerStars, and this time around the margin of victory would be much higher than the single Big Blind victory he booked over “DodgyFish72”. Once again PokerStars staked their online qualifier with $15,000 and let him loose on Isildur1 at four $5/$10 NLHE tables with the knowledge that he will get to keep whatever amount is remaining of his stake money at the end of the match.

“MasterMixus” as Blom’s opponent is known by at the online poker tables, was giving Blom everything he could handle until with about 100 hands to go, and the match virtually all-square, he decided to just ride it out and lock up a nice $13,721 score since he was allowed to keep whatever was left of his stake money.

Blom has now defeated Tony G, Daniel Cates, Eugene Katchalov, Daniel Negreanu, Scott Palmer and the two online qualifiers, with his only defeat coming in the very first Superstars Showdown against Isaac Haxton.

WSOP adds interesting wrinkle to 2011 schedule

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

The World Series of Poker is adding a very intriguing wrinkle to this year’s tournament series with the creation of WSOP Rematches, pitting the final two players from select tournaments in a heads-up rematch that will be filmed by ESPN.

Two of the first three matches we will be graced with are a couple of the most infamous heads-up duels in WSOP history:

·    Chris Moneymaker vs. Sam Farha from the 2003 WSOP Main Event
·    Phil Hellmuth vs. Johnny Chan from the 1989 WSOP Main Event

The third rematch will be voted on by the fans through the WSOP Facebook page, with the following choices available:

·    1988: Johnny Chan vs. Erik Seidel
·    2004: Greg Raymer vs. David Williams
·    2006: Jamie Gold vs. Paul Wasicka
·    2010: Jonathan Duhamel vs. John Racener

Each match will be played in a best-of-three format, with the first match recreating the exact scenario the two players found themselves in down to the chip and blind-level. The second match will see the chip-stacks reversed, while the third round match will see each player start with an equal amount of chips.

The WSOP Rematches will take place during the 2011 World Series of Poker, and will take place on June 2, 2011. The matches will air on ESPN as a two-hour special on July 26th, complete with footage from the original showdown and interview segments with the participants.

Negreanu bests Isildur1 in second act of Superstar Showdown

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

After losing $150,000 to Viktor “Isildur1” Blom in their first Superstar Showdown confrontation on March 20th, Daniel Negreanu decided to ante-up another $150,000 for Round 2 of the match this past Sunday, and although things started off very rocky for Negreanu he managed to turn it around and exact a little revenge from Isildur1.

The second match started out basically the same as the first as Negreanu found himself in a $120,000 hole after 1,200 hands. With only $30,000 left to mount a comeback Negreanu was probably not too thrilled about his chances, which he expressed in the chatbox after the match: “I was stuck like $120K at one point I think. I broke lots of stuff in my room btw lol, smashed everything.”

However, comeback he did, and when the dust settled after the 2,500th hand of the match Negreanu found himself looking at a $26,500 profit! While still down $123,500 to Isildur1 over the two-session challenge, things could have been much, much, worse for Negreanu.

It’s unclear how PokerStars will score this challenge –did the two players split the match 1-1, or did Isildur1 win the Superstar Showdown against Negreanu 1-0, the latter of which is my take on the subject. But we do know that the next challenge match will use the same format as Isildur1 takes on Scott “urnotindangr2” Palmer this coming Sunday April 3rd.

Here is a look at Isildur1’s record in the Superstar Showdown matches:

·    L to Isaac Haxton
·    W over Tony G
·    W over Daniel Cates
·    W over Eugene Katchalov
·    W over Online Qualifier DodgyFish72
·    W over Daniel Negreanu

Isildur1 destroys Daniel Negreanu in Superstar Showdown

Monday, March 21st, 2011

The sixth installment of the Superstar Showdown Challenge Match on PokerStars was a highly anticipated affair, pitting old-guard poker player Daniel Negreanu against young upstart Viktor “Isildur1” Blom, with the match slated to take place across two Sundays. Unfortunately for players pining to see the two players battle it out to the end, Isildur1 busted Daniel Negreanu in just 1,439 hands!

The original plan was for Negreanu and Blom to play two 2,500-hand sessions on consecutive Sundays. However, Negreanu lost the entire $150,000 that each player puts up for the match in the first session, making Session 2 next weekend unnecessary –although the two may decide to begin a new match next weekend which appears to be the case according to Negreanu’s Twitter account:

“Ok, officially shook off the loss. Back to the grind this week and a rematch with a fresh 150k next week.”

Negreanu –who is self-admittedly not an online poker player—put in a lot of training sessions for the battle, playing some of the top multi-tablers in online poker like ‘nanonoko’ is small-stakes versions of the Superstar Challenge, and will likely be very unhappy with how things went against Isildur1: Partway through the match Negreanu took to his Twitter account and posted the following: “This has been pretty disgusting so far. Can’t imagine running any worse.”

The win runs Isildur1’s record in the Superstar Showdown matches to an impressive 5-1, with his only loss coming in the first challenge against Isaac Haxton –since then Isildur1 has bested Tony G, Daniel Cates, Eugene Katchalov, and Daniel Negreanu, in addition to besting an online qualifier by a single big blind in a pared-down version of the match set up by PokerStars.

Andrew Robl issues an Ultimate Fighting prop bet challenge

Friday, March 18th, 2011

Anyone out there who has ever wanted to take on Victory Poker pro Andrew “GooD2cu” Robl in an UFC-style Mixed-Martial Arts match now has the chance! Provided you are willing to put up $50,000 of your own money on the match –and provided Robl considers you on the same level of MMA training as he is!

In a recent blog post Robl talked about his newfound passion for MMA, and how he is now settling down with a new girlfriend: “My life recently has been relatively simple – polar opposite of the Ship It Holla Balla days.  I spend time doing three things – Playing poker – Training MMA and spending quality time with my girl.”

On the MMA front, Robl explained how he is a beginner, but is learning everyday –training 3-4x a week—and detailed how a prop bet between himself and Sorel Mizzi fell through, so now he is looking for a new victim adversary: “I was planning on doing a $50,000 cage fight with Sorel Mizzi come WSOP time – but Sorel backed out of the bet. He’s had enough problems recently without having to worry about my fists breaking his face. Sorel has always been a great guy in my experience – and I certainly hope the rumors about him aren’t true. If they are he made a huge mistake – and I only hope he makes amens and learns from the experience. If any beginning fighter wants to make a wager on a fight – let me know!”

Online qualifier to face Isildur1 in Superstar Showdown

Friday, February 25th, 2011

The PokerStars Superstar Showdown will be played in a slightly different format this coming Sunday, as Viktor “Isildur1” Blom will be taking on the first qualifier from PokerStars. Instead of the typical $50/$100 games that Isildur1 plays in the usual pro vs. pro SuperStar Showdown, the upcoming match will take place across four $5/$10 NLHE tables –more in line with what the typical online poker player can stand to lose!

The match which takes place this Sunday will pit Isildur1 against a player using the screen-name “DodgyFish72″ who won an $11 tournament to get his shot at Viktor Blom. PokerStars will be staking “ÐodgyFish72” $15,000 and he will keep whatever sum he has left on the tables at the end of the match –He does not have to pay back the initial $15,000 whether he wins or loses.

This will be the fifth Superstar Showdown Isildur1 has taken part in. His first match saw him lose to Isaac Haxton ($41000), followed by wins against Tony G ($44,000), Daniel Cates ($51,000), and Eugene Katchalov ($111,000). The matches are spread across four heads-up poker tables and last 2,500 hands, with the winner of the match keeping all profits –and in the case of the typical Superstar Showdown matches PokerStars kicks-in an extra $10k to the winner.

You can watch Viktor “Isildur1” Blom take on DodgyFish72 this Sunday at PokerStars.com

Isildur1 finding his stride on PokerStars

Friday, February 18th, 2011

After it was announced a few months ago that PokerStars had signed the mysterious high-stakes poker player Isildur1 –later revealed to be Viktor Blom—the big question was whether a player who has been nearly bankrupted at the high stakes poker tables was worthy of being one of the main faces of the biggest online poker site in the world?

Well, after an initial bumpy start, Isildur1 seems to be settling into his new home at the PokerStars high-stakes tables, and has managed to climb out of the red and into profitable numbers for the year, to the tune of some $130,000.

Not only has Blom held his own against the likes of Rui Cao, Daniel Cates, Phil Galfond, and Scott Palmer at the $25/$50 PLO and NLHE tables at PokerStars, but he has also fared extremely well in the Superstar Showdown Challenge Matches the site set up for the newest sponsored pro.

After losing just over $40,000 to Isaac Haxton in the first Superstar Showdown match, Isildur1 has hit his stride, and proven his reputation as one of the best heads-up NLHE players in the world is warranted: First besting Tony G for over $40k, then Cates for over $50k, and most recently Eugene Katchalov for over $100,000!

After a couple months to digest the signing it looks like PokerStars made a very wise business decision in signing the 20 year-old Swedish phenom referred to as simply “Isildur1”.

Viktor Isildur1 Blom destroys Eugene Katchalov in Superstar Showdown

Monday, February 14th, 2011

The fourth PokerStars Superstar Showdown challenge match took place this past Sunday and saw Viktor “Isildur1” Blom absolutely destroy his opponent, Eugene “MyRabbitFoo” Katchalov. Blom took over $111,000 out of the bankroll of Katchalov during their 2,500 match that stretched across four tables of $50/$100 No Limit Holdem.

After losing the first Superstar Showdown to Isaac Haxton, Blom has gone on to win the next three against Tony G, Daniel Cates, and now Katchalov: Over the four matches Blom has a profit of around $160,000, proving he is in fact one of the best heads-up NLHE players in the world.

Katchalov, who was coming off his $100k Super-High-Roller win at the PCA, had trouble getting anything going throughout the battle, and like many of Isildur1’s opponents he seemed to struggle with the unbridled aggression and unorthodox plays of the Swedish poker pro.

According to the PokerStars Blog we can expect the fifth Superstar Showdown Challenge on February 27th, 2011, but unlike the four previous installments match number five will pit Isildur1 against an online qualifier. Another potential opponent is of course Daniel Negreanu, who stated on his blog that he is not quite ready for the undertaking at this time, but he has played three mini-Superstar Showdowns at the $5/$10 level against Randy ‘nanonoko’ Lew, Justin ‘ZeeJustin’ Bonomo, and against Katchalov just prior to his battle against Isildur1.
