Facebook to get a little more online poker friendly

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

It appears that the advertising dollars of many online gaming sites, including sports-books, poker rooms, and online casinos, will now be welcome on Facebook, according to a statement issued by the multi-billion dollar Social Media giant. However, the new rules regarding online gaming advertising does not give the industry carte blanche to market their services. Facebook has installed a number of restrictions on these ads in order to stay on the right side of any local laws.

In addition to demanding all advertisements conform to local laws, Facebook will also restrict precisely who can see the ads based on their location; a process that Facebook will have a final say on.

The final twist is in regards to US advertisers. US-based advertisers (affiliates and such) are allowed to purchase ad-space on Facebook, but their advertisements cannot target US players. Basically, a US-based affiliate will be able to purchase ad-space on Facebook (if they can afford the rumored $30,000 ad-buy) but their advertisements will only be seen by players in countries and locales that are approved by Facebook.

My guess is that many Europeans and Asians will start seeing advertisements for Party Poker, PokerStars, and the larger sites on the iPoker Network, Merge Gaming Network, and OnGame Network in the near future. But I doubt any affiliates can afford –or more aptly, are willing to part with—the $30k fee that Facebook is charging, so even though this is another small step in the right direction for the online gaming industry it remains to be seen if it will have any impact at this point in time.

Doyles Room overhauls online poker software

Friday, May 13th, 2011

After moving to the very small Yatahay Poker Network in early 2011, the one thing Doyles Room must have known going in was that they would need to update the Network’s software –which was considered slow and unsuitable for multi-tabling by many online poker players. Since the move from the Cake Poker Network to Yatahay, Doyles Room players have complained mightily about numerous flaws in the software, as well as a lack of features that players have grown accustomed to, and have become standard at larger online poker rooms.

With many players leaving Doyles Room, and potential players having reservations about joining the site over software concerns the site had to act. And on Wednesday night we learned that Doyles Room had put the finishing touches on a major software update that includes the following changes:

·    Resizable Tables
·    Bounty/Knockout Tournaments
·    Stable software
·    Time Bank
·    Bad Beat Jackpot
·    Time Based Tournaments
·    7 Card Stud Winnings Paid Immediately
·    32 Card Poker Full Real Time Backend
·    Fold/Show functionality
·    Improved Late registration
·    Straddle Tables
·    Bonus Cash
·    Chop Pots Auto
·    Rebuy Options
·    Short Handed Tournaments
·    Cascading Tables-Multi-tabling

In the E-Mail sent out to Doyles Room players the site called the upgrade just the beginning, a clear indication that the site will be continuing to make a major push into the US market following Full Tilt Poker’s, PokerStars, and Absolute/UB Poker’s withdrawal from the US market.

Just launch the DoylesRoom software that’s already on your desktop and our system will automatically upgrade you to the latest version.

After crackdown Victory Poker leaves US market

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Another causality of poker’s Black Friday seems to be Victory Poker, which has decided to leave the Us market despite not being named in the indictment or mentioned in any way. Victory Poker CEO Dan Fleyshman informed the poker world via Twitter that he has asked the Cake Poker Network –which is still serving the US market—to remove access to Victory Poker by US residents. Fleyshman told his Twitter followers: “Asked the Cake Network to block U.S. players from the Victory Poker site. They are supportive of my decision. Hope it gets regulated 1 day!”

Victory Poker was recently in the poker headliners as they flirted with the idea of joining the Cereus Poker Network, but that deal was eventually called off and the site remains one of the big dogs on the Cake Poker Network.

Fleyshman’s concerns may stem from the fact that unlike many other online poker providers he still resides in the United States, which puts him in a lot more jeopardy of facing prosecution. Fleyshman followed up his initial Twitter comments with the following: “2/3 of our player base is international. Don’t want to mess with the U.S. government, they’re angry at the ‘Big 3’ for a reason.”

It will be very interesting to see how other poker rooms currently operating in the US market proceed from here on out.

Cake Poker woes continue with new lawsuit

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

It has been a brutal year for the once prominent Cake Poker Network, as a series of major poker rooms have left the network and their encryption was found to be sub-par and easily cracked by pokertableratings.com, not to mention the loss of Lee Jones and Serge Ravitch from their team at the tail end of 2010. Now the network that recently inked a deal with PokerListings.com has even more trouble as two men have filed a Civil Claim in Canadian court claiming they were not compensated for their early contributions to the site.

According to an article by PokerScout.com –with an attached copy of the entire Civil Claim from a British Columbia court– Ryan Bennett and Francois Piette are alleging “that they developed groundbreaking concepts such as multi-level marketing (think Refer-A-Friend) and the use of photo-real images on a poker site. These ideas were shared with the principals of Yummy Interactive, who went on to form the Cake Poker Network.”

The claim goes on to outline the corporate structure of Cake Poker as well as the reasons for this structure:

“a British Columbia corporation was going to be incorporated [which] would then be rolled into an offshore entity which would then operate and market” the project. They were told this was “necessary because you can develop online poker software in British Columbia but you cannot operate an online poker site from British Columbia.”

As Bluff Magazine joked: Are these two sure they want 20% of the struggling network?

Hero Poker launches on Merge Gaming Network

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

The Merge Gaming network saw some growth during the Aussie Millions with the announcement that would be adding a new online poker room called Hero Poker. Hero Poker is fronted by CEO David Jung, and already features an all-star lineup of sponsored pros including Triple Crown winner and former PokerStars sponsored pro Gavin Griffin as well as Canadian pro Terrence Chan, Daniel Schreiber, James Mackey, Julian Powell, and David Ewing.

Hero Poker uses a legendary heroes theme with famous quotes from some of history’s greatest leaders on its website, going so far as to use a Spartan logo with a Spade on the side of the helmet. Their VIP Rewards Program follows this theme with its Spartan Elite 300 rewards program. With a number of levels and escalating bonuses and rewards for their players, Hero Poker has one of the most progressive rewards structures in online poker.

The Merge Gaming Network is one of the largest collections of poker rooms in the poker industry, and features some of the softest tables in poker thanks to the numerous sports-books affiliated with their poker rooms –most notably the former Sportsbook.com.

Other high-profile poker rooms sharing the network with Hero Poker include Lock Poker, Carbon Poker, and Reefer Poker. Overall the Merge Gaming Network has an average of some 1,200 real-money poker players at their cash-game tables at any given time, and is ranked 24th in overall traffic according to the tracking site pokerscout.com.

New poker room opens at the Hard Rock Casino in Tampa

Friday, December 31st, 2010

With poker players flocking to Florida in droves since the state expanded their gaming industry to include higher buy-in poker games, and with the new surge of players the casino industry in Florida has been trying to keep up with the practically overnight influx of new players, many looking for poker games.

One such casino that has seized upon the opportunity is the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Tampa, Florida. The casino has closed its 8,000 sq. ft. poker room –replacing the poker tables with new slot machines– and opened an even larger, more modern, 10,000 sq. ft. poker room.

The new poker room opened in the days leading up to Christmas, and players were treated to a number of promotions like free T-Shirts and prizes, and a special $100,000 freeroll tournament for the higher volume players who qualified during November.

The new poker room features a separated high-limit area, a full service bar, new cashier cages, and strategically placed 60” TV’s around the room. Players will also have access to an outdoor smoking area, and like all other Hard Rock’s around the world the Tampa poker room will feature an assortment of musical memorabilia.

Now that the limits on buy-ins and pot sizes have been lifted in Florida expect more casinos to expand their poker areas, which has turned into a major draw for new players and high-rollers – Full poker rooms are also a necessity when it comes to attracting major poker tournaments to your casino.

Cake Poker Network adds Poker King

Monday, October 11th, 2010

It’s been a tumultuous year for the Cake Poker Network; first was the launch of the Phil Laak brand, Unabomber Poker, which was an instant hit thanks to Laak’s following in the poker world. However, this was followed by the loss of two of their top sites PlayersOnly and SportsBook, which saw the Cake Poker Network plummet in traffic from a top 10 contender to nearly out of the top 20 according to pokerscout.com. Since this time the Cake Poker Network has been working overtime to improve its brand.

The first step in the network’s resurgence was luring one of the top new poker rooms away from the Everleaf Poker Network, Victory Poker. Victory Poker boasts a stable full of young poker talent including Antonio Esfandiari, Andrew Robl and David “TheMaven” Chicotsky, not to mention their high-profile CEO –who recently made the WSOP Europe Main Event final table—Dan Fleyshman.

Now the Cake Poker Network has added yet another poker room, Poker King. Poker King is an Asian-based poker room and online gaming site that features a number of unique features such as live online dealers.

With the addition of more and more fresh, unique, poker rooms we could see the Cake Poker Network resume its quest to become a Top 10 online poker network, and from there only the sky is the limit.

Full Tilt Poker offers players a $10 reload bonus!

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

As players log on to Full Tilt poker today, they’re being offered a reload bonus from Full Tilt. Most of the bonuses have been $10, however there have been reports of some larger bonus offers.

This bonus offer that comes in the form of a popup when players initially log in at Full Tilt is a great retention tool for Full Tilt Poker players, as well as a way for Full Tilt Poker to introduce their new ‘Quick Deposit’ eCheck deposit option.

Using Quick Deposit will be just like making any other eCheck deposit at most poker rooms.

This is a great little promotion to advertise to currently tagged players at Full Tilt. People love free stuff, especially free poker money! This might just be the nudge your Full Tilt Poker players need to bring them back from anywhere else they may have wandered.

Visa Cardholders having transaction trouble due to New Norwegian Gambling Laws

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

On June 1st the Norwegian government put new gambling laws into effect. Now with the laws in effect customers who have Norwegian bank and credit cards are having trouble placing any kind of electronic payment. Not only are payments to online poker rooms and casinos being denied but other online transactions as well.

The new laws in Norway are similar to the UIGEA in the United States. Financial institutions are supposed to deny online transactions from online casinos. The list created by the government for banks to deny has two names on it, Norsk Tipping and Rikstoto.

However since transactions are taking place electronically the automated system is not only blocking online casino and poker payments it is also blocking payments for other online charges such as casinos that may be abroad or cruise shops and other tourist destinations. Those who have this problem must enter in many different contract agreements with Norway VISA to be able to have their transactions go through.

The new law was created to protect those who are addicted to gambling. But it does not seem to be working. Players in Norway can easily get a foreign bank account via online and then use that account to play online casino games so the new bill is affecting just a small portion of those who live in Norway.

RaisseandFold Poker Room Offering 40% Rakeback

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Rakeback is very important to poker players as it is a way to get money back for playing online poker. For those that do not know a Rakeback is when a poker room will give players a percentage of the rake back to the player for playing. One online poker site has recently increased their Rakeback offering to entice players to visit their site more.

RaiseandFold Poker has announced they are offering a 40% Rakeback for their players. This means that those who play regularly at the online poker site will be able to earn a nice amount of cash back. Since the Rakeback is 40%, players would get a larger amount back than other poker rooms. For example, those who accumulate $100 in rake would earn $40 back.

Players will get their Rakeback at the end of the week, so it won’t be long before players see a return for their game play. Part of the Everleaf network, RaiseandFold decided to increase the Rakeback to get players to play at their site as well as help out in tough economic times.

A spokesman for RaiseandFold commented: “The rake back tabularizes the total amount of rake that was provided by the gambler (as well as tourneys fees). 40% of that amount is re-deposited to the gambler’s account. The current economic environment affects everybody, including poker players. This new rake back plan provides players the chance to play more and the opportunity to win more
