Poker pro Mclean Karr is no stranger when it comes to live poker tournaments happening across the globe, but the young American poker pro has put together a fabulous 2011 tournament campaign, including two major wins this month alone.
Earlier this month Karr was in Macau to watch his good friend Michael Phelps compete on the world stage; Phelps later returned the favor by railing Karr during a high-roller tournament at the Poker King Club StarWorld Macau Casino that featured a $100k HKD buy-in. Karr bested a field of 20 participants to walk away with the over $800k HKD for first-place.
And now yesterday it was reported that Karr had won the Parx Open Poker Classic, netting Karr an impressive $74,725, and diamond bracelet from Golden Nugget Jewelers from Philadelphia. Karr won the title holding pocket Aces against Dan Smith’s dominated A/J. Other well-known members of the final table included Will Failla, Ronald Lee, and Michael Sica.
To round out Mclean Karr’s International Man of Mystery resume: In March Karr captured the WPT Vienna High-Roller tournament, pocketing over $260k in prize-money, which he followed up with by securing a five-figure cash at the EPT Grand Final Main Event in Madrid, Spain. Other locales where Karr has pocketed a little bit of coin this year include San Remo, Italy and at the WSOP in Las Vegas this summer. All-in-all it sounds like Mclean Karr leads a fairly interesting life; travelling around the globe to play in poker tournaments, occasionally accompanied by a high-profile celebrity!

Hedge Fund Manager and poker enthusiast David Einhorn is now a minority owner of the Major League Baseball team the New York Mets according to ESPN. Einhorn, best known in the poker world for his 18th place finish in the 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event, where he garnered a lot of TV time in what is still the largest poker tournament of all time –both in terms of entrants and prize-pool—put up a reported $200 million for his share in the New York Mets.
Einhorn’s money was not won at a poker table however, considering he is a well-known name on Wall Street and is the President of Greenlight Capital, which Wikipedia terms as a “long-short value-oriented hedge fund”. Einhorn is also a well known philanthropist who donates his time and money to numerous charities in the New York area in addition to sitting on the board of The Michael J. Fox Foundation as well as the board for Robin Hood.
In addition to his deep run at the 2006 WOP, where he cashed for $659,730 –all of which went to charity by the way, Einhorn has been a somewhat regular participant at the World Poker Finals at Foxwoods in Connecticut and has cashed twice; once in 2004 for $6,075, and again in 2008 where he won the $2,800 No limit Holdem tournament, collecting $89,475. A special thanks to thehendonmob.com for Einhorn’s career statistics.

As Black Friday continues to be examined from virtually every angle, the World Poker Tour’s Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown is the first major US poker tournament to take place after the fallout from April 15th, but unfortunately as a first-time event there is no way to compare this year’s turnout by looking at prior tournament attendance.
That said the 406 players that showed up for Day 1 of the Main Event at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino is one of the best turnouts on Season 9 of the WPT. Attendance may increase slightly as registration will remain open until Day 2 begins.
As with most $10k tournaments, the tournament saw a bevy of poker pros make the trip to Florida, with some of poker’s best having solid Day 1 performances. Among the 290 survivors from Day 1 were Jason Mercier, Harrison Gimbel, Robert Mizrachi, while Dwyte Pilgrim, Faraz Jaka, and Antonio Esfandiari all hit the rail on Day 1.
Here is a look at the Top 10 chip counts heading into Day 2 of the World Poker Tour’s Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown:
1. Randy Dorfman – 160,000
2. Nick Grippo – 149,375
3. James Carroll – 130,925
4. Todd Terry – 124,975
5. Seth Davies – 115,225
6. Joe Serock – 113,150
7. Marsha Wolak – 106,350
8. Elio Cubrera – 105,025
9. Jorge Chavez – 104,525
10. Aarib Schaff – 104,225

With all of the major weekly guaranteed tournaments seeing a huge decrease in their guaranteed prize-pools it should come as no surprise that PokerStars has decided to make widespread adjustments to their upcoming Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) tournament series.
Not only did PokerStars drastically reduce the total guaranteed prize-pools for the SCOOP tournament series from $45 million down to $25 million, but they also decided to adjust the schedule to better accommodate European and Asian Players now that US poker players are completely out of the picture.
Each SCOOP tournament at PokerStars will now start three hours ahead of the original start time which will align with peak hours in Europe and Asia much better than the previous start times, which focused on US players.
Despite a nearly 50% cut in the total guaranteed prize-money, the SCOOP tournament series remains one of the largest in online poker, and is extremely popular due to its innovative format which sees three separate tournaments at small, medium, and high-stakes buy-ins for each tournament.
The 2011 SCOOP will feature a total of 38 poker tournaments and will begin on May 8th and run through May 22, 2011 when the three SCOOP Main Events will take place with buy-ins ranging from $109, to up over $10k:
Low: $109 buy-in - $750,000 guarantee
Med: $1,050 buy-in - $1,500,000 guarantee
High: $10,300 buy-in - $2,500,000 guarantee
For the complete SCOOP schedule you can visit www.pokerstars.com, or www.pokerstars.eu

Beginning today, Monday, April 11, UB Poker will be hosting four daily freeroll tournaments that are part of the poker room’s partnership with the Heartland Poker Tour. The grand prize at the end of the rainbow includes a 12-stop Season pass for the HPT, valued at over $20,000 courtesy of UB Poker!
UB Poker became the official sponsor of the Heartland Poker Tour recently, and at the time they announced plans to really step-up and market the growing poker tour that includes stops all across America and is broadcast into 100 million homes every single week on FSN.
There are three rounds a player must get through in order to win the promotion: the first step is to finish in the Top 50 of one of the Daily Freeroll Tournaments on UB Poker which grants you access to the Weekly Freeroll Tournament that will take place on Sundays. Any player finishing in the Top 100 of any one of these Weekly Freerolls will gain access to the Main Event Freeroll which will take place on June 25th.
Even though every player in the Main Event should feel fortunate to have made it this far –probably between 1,000 and 1,200 players total– only one player will walk away with the grand prize: A 12-event passport that they can use to enter any Heartland Poker Tour tournament.
Although it will be a long road to victory, considering all of the tournaments are freerolls should entice quite a few players to enter the competition.

With both Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars throwing their hats into the live poker tournament ring, UB Poker has just taken its first major step in that direction with the announcement that they will now be the official sponsor of the Heartland Poker Tour.
The smaller-scale Heartland Poker Tour (commonly referred to as the HPT) may not be on par with the Full Tilt Poker Onyx Cup Series or the PokerStars led NAPT, EPT and so on, but the HPT is far from a local tournament league, considering the tournaments are broadcast into over 100 million homes each week on FOXSports.
According to press release announcing the agreement: “UB.net will have a prominent presence in all HPT Season 7 episodes, and at hptpoker.com as well as on-site at HPT live events. The leading free-play poker site will also host a series of online tourneys that give players the opportunity to win attractive prize packages, including HPT tournament entries, event hospitality, UB swag, plus cash towards travel and accommodation. The ultimate freeroll challenge will award a Season 8 HPT VIP Tour Pass to the winner, with full details to come shortly.”
UB Poker will also be sending a contingent of their Team UB Poker pros to HTP events including Tiffany Michelle, Maria Ho, 2009 POY Eric Baldwin, Joe Sebok, Prahlad Friedman, Adam Levy and Brandon Cantu.
The HPT also recently inked a deal with 2009 WSOP Main Event runner-up Darvin Moon who joined the tour as a spokesman and ambassador.

In January Full Tilt Poker ran their Doubles Guarantee Week promotion in honor of the creation of Multi-Entry tournaments, and now the popular online poker room has decided to bring back Doubles Guarantee Week for a second go-round.
From March 28, 2011 through April 3rd, 2011 all tournaments with a guaranteed prize-pool at Full Tilt Poker will see their guarantees doubled, while the buy-in remains the same! Furthermore, Full Tilt Poker is TRIPLING the guarantees on all Sunday tournaments, including the $750k guaranteed which will now boast a minimum prize-pool of $2.25 million.
All of the guaranteed tournaments during the promotion week will be played as Multi-Entry Tournaments, giving players the opportunity to register multiple times for each tournament –Multi-Entries is a main reason why the guaranteed prize-pools can be doubled and tripled at Full Tilt Poker.
The Doubles Guarantee Week that took place in January led to the near-legendary Monday $1k tournament which saw its guaranteed prize-pool double from the usual $300k to $600k, a number that was inconsequential in the end as a massive field of 1,454 players registered for the tournament creating a prize-pool of over $1.4 million –over 4x the usual amount! The tournament gained even more exposure when one of online poker’s top tournament players of all-time, Shaun “TedsFishFry” Deeb, was able to take down the massive first-prize of $312,610.

Two high-profile members of Team PokerStars Pro have been very vocal in their criticism of the recently announced Full Tilt Poker tournament series the Onyx Cup. The first person to launch a few verbal swipes at the ultra-high-stakes poker tour was Daniel Negreanu who complained of the tour’s scheduling conflict with the PokerStars.net EPT Grand Finale in Madrid Spain, and then criticized the structure of the tournaments.
Negreanu unleashed his criticisms in a series of Tweets for his Twitter account:
“Reading up on Onyx Cup and see that its a speed poker/turbo tourney. Well that’s tilting. Also runs against EPT Grand Final. Count me out,”
“Would have absolutely played but being a structure geek I’m not looking to take poker back 20 years with crapshoots on TV. This is so dumb,”
Today it was 2008 World Series of Poker Champion Peter Eastgate –recently returned to poker—who according to www.poker.org (who apparently have some Danish speaking writers on staff) told the Danish Poker News site pokernyhederne.com that he would not be participating in the tournaments because of the six-figure buy-in amounts. Here is a look at some of the quotes attributed to Eastgate:
“Maybe if I sell enough shares for me to have a lucrative freeroll or a decent small portion of percentages, I would play,”
“But I am no longer willing to risk such astronomical amounts of money out of my own pocket,”
“I lost $1.7 million on the FIFA World Cup. This has taught me the lesson of gambling for more money than I feel comfortable losing,”

What should have been the highlight of a young poker player’s career has turned into an utter nightmare, and caused many in the poker community to reflect on a bizarre situation that saw the 6th place finisher in this past weekend’s 5th Anniversary Sunday Million tournament stripped of the $500,000 in prize-money he had won.
The player in question was “zeurrr”, a resident of Holland who was part of the 9-way deal at the final table of the 5th anniversary Sunday Million tournament that saw him pocket $518,402. The huge payday in a historic poker tournament had a Dutch newspaper attempt to make contact with their local online pro only to get in touch with the player’s father. The father told the newspaper that it was his account, and that he had played in the tournament.
You see, there was an issue with the son playing online poker as he is only 17, and PokerStars Terms and Conditions state that a player must be 18 to play on the site. After their own investigation PokerStars determined that it was the son who played in the tournament, and subsequently confiscated his winnings from the tournament –which set of a firestorm at the 2+2 poker forum with such heavyweights as Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan even weighing in.
It appears that PokerStars will be dividing the confiscated prize-money amongst the other players in the tournament, but with the bizarre circumstances with the 9-player deal it’s unclear how this will be accomplished –keep in mind 10th place received about $26,000 while 9th place received over $270,000 because of the deal.

The GUKPT will take place at the Grosvenor Victoria Casino in London, while the UKIPT will be held in Manchester at the G Casino.

The Main Event of the PokerStars UKIPT will kick off the tournament series on the 10th of March with a £500 + £50 buy-in NLHE tournament with a £200,000 guaranteed prize-pool.
