One of the biggest poker tournaments of the year will be entering its penultimate day on Wednesday, with a mere 24 players still in contention for the €800,000 first-place prize-money. Leading the final three tables is the Day 3 chip leader, Chris McClung. The Canadian poker pro McClung once again dominated the action, and for the second straight day ended the day with a sizable chip-lead.
In what was another short day at the EPT San Remo, it took the 64 players who sat down to begin the day about seven hours to reach the final three tables, at which point play was halted for the night.
McClung will face some stiff competition on Day 5 of the 2011 EPT San Remo Main Event considering some of the other notable players that also survived Day 4’s action: EPT and WPT Champion Alessio Isaia, PokerStars Pro Johnny Lodden, Kevin MacPhee, Barny Boatman, PokerStars Pro Lex Veldhuis, 2011 WSOPE Main Event Champion Elio Fox, and Mike “Timex” McDonald.
Hitting the rail on Tuesday were 2010 November Niner Joseph Cheong, Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Selbst, David Back, John Duthie, and Tyler Bonkowski.
Here is a look at the chip-leaders heading into Day of the EPT San Remo:
- Chris McClung – 3,148,000
- Daniel Neilson – 2,011,000
- Mustapha Kanit – 1,761,000
- Alessio Isaia – 1,524,000
- Kevin MacPhee – 1,441,000
- Barny Boatman – 1,257,000
- Johnny Lodden – 1,227,000
- Jan Bendik – 1,211,000
- Andrey Pateychuk – 1,200,000
- Dimitar Danchev – 1,196,000
Day 5 will see the remaining players play-down to the final table of eight players.

Poker pro Mclean Karr is no stranger when it comes to live poker tournaments happening across the globe, but the young American poker pro has put together a fabulous 2011 tournament campaign, including two major wins this month alone.
Earlier this month Karr was in Macau to watch his good friend Michael Phelps compete on the world stage; Phelps later returned the favor by railing Karr during a high-roller tournament at the Poker King Club StarWorld Macau Casino that featured a $100k HKD buy-in. Karr bested a field of 20 participants to walk away with the over $800k HKD for first-place.
And now yesterday it was reported that Karr had won the Parx Open Poker Classic, netting Karr an impressive $74,725, and diamond bracelet from Golden Nugget Jewelers from Philadelphia. Karr won the title holding pocket Aces against Dan Smith’s dominated A/J. Other well-known members of the final table included Will Failla, Ronald Lee, and Michael Sica.
To round out Mclean Karr’s International Man of Mystery resume: In March Karr captured the WPT Vienna High-Roller tournament, pocketing over $260k in prize-money, which he followed up with by securing a five-figure cash at the EPT Grand Final Main Event in Madrid, Spain. Other locales where Karr has pocketed a little bit of coin this year include San Remo, Italy and at the WSOP in Las Vegas this summer. All-in-all it sounds like Mclean Karr leads a fairly interesting life; travelling around the globe to play in poker tournaments, occasionally accompanied by a high-profile celebrity!

It’s not as if the women of poker haven’t had their chances at the 2011 WSOP, with their tally now at three final tables and two 2nd place finishes, but the streak has now reached 179 open-tournaments without a bracelet for the ladies. It’s almost hard to imagine that the same field of women who have been winning their fair share of major poker tournaments around the globe could have such a pronounced bad run at the World Series of Poker since 2008.
Earlier in the 2011 WSOP it was Maria Ho who finished in 2nd place behind Allen Bari in the $5k No Limit Holdem tournament –although it should be pointed out that Ho was at a severe chip disadvantage when heads-up play began—and yesterday it was Kim Nguyen, who would finish in 2nd place to Darren Woods after taking a slight chip-lead –around a 3-to-2 advantage– into their heads-up duel in the $2,500 6-Max Limit Holdem tournament.
So the number now stands at 179 straight WSOP tournaments since Vanessa Selbst won a bracelet in the 2008, $1,500 PLO tournament at the World Series of Poker, and as we start to near the halfway point of the 2011 WSOP, the possibility of another year without a WSOP win for the ladies starts to look more and more like a reality. The talent is definitely there, but the variance seems to be killing them.

The Federated Sports + Gaming Poker League is going all out when it comes to changing the culture of poker tournaments. Not only is the league using a qualification process for all potential entrants –218 players were invited to compete on Season 1 of the poker tour—but the tournaments are also going to consist of a Pro-Am, a charity tournament, as well as the $20,000, rake-free, Main Events which will feature a number of different formats.
The latest addition to the FS+G Poker League was the announcement this week of a Standards and Conduct Committee, which according to a press release, “will work to ensure fair play, good character and integrity in every aspect of the league’s operation.”
Five players were honored with a position on the Standards and Conduct Committee including Eric Baldwin, Andy Bloch, Chad Brown, Joe Hachem and Nick Schulman. The remaining members of the committee are Tournament Director Matt Savage and an independent professional ethics advisor, Stephen Martin, as well as the League’s Commissioner Annie Duke –who is on the committee but not in a voting capacity. Among the duties of the Standards and Conduct Committee will be:
Monitoring the FS+G league member qualification and admission process.
Partnering in the development of league tournament rules and other membership policies.
Overseeing the continued eligibility of players to participate in the league after their initial qualification period.
Functioning as a league and player resource for establishing and maintaining the credibility and integrity of the league.
Overseeing player compliance with the league’s Code of Conduct, tournament rules and managing other related policies and procedures.
You can read the entire press release on the Standards and Conduct Committee at the FS+G website.

The first laid-off poker pro from UB Poker has now landed a new sponsorship deal, but it’s not with another online poker room, as word came down last week that Maria Ho inked a deal with WinStar World Casino to represent the brick and mortar casino’s poker room as a spokesperson.
Ho will join 2004 World Series of Poker Champion Greg Raymer as spokespeople for the casino, where her duties will include print and television ad campaigns as well as participating in the casino’s poker tournaments and satellites, including the annual River Poker Series.
Ho told PokerNews.com, “I’m really looking forward to this opportunity to work with WinStar. Their casino is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. I could stay there for days without ever stepping outside!” Ho went on to say, “From my past experiences, the people who I’ve met and played with at the tables have a warmth and love for the game that is refreshing and reminds me why I love to play. I’m looking forward to spending more time there,”
The assistant general manager of WinStar world Casino, Michael McEwan, also spoke to PokerNews.com regarding the deal, saying, “We are honored to have Maria Ho represent WinStar World Casino in the 2011 Guaranteed $3,000,000 River Poker Series. She is a well-respected and often emulated poker player who we feel will be relatable to our patrons and to players across the nation,”
With online poker effectively banned in the US, deals like Maria Ho’s, Greg Raymer’s, Bernard Lee’s (Lee represents Foxwoods Casino), and Darvin Moon’s (Moon represents the Heartland Poker Tour), could start to become the norm instead of the exceptions.

When poker pro Ali Tekintamgak showed up for the final table of the Partouche Poker Tour Grand Finale last November the former WPT Spain winner discovered he had been disqualified from the tournament for cheating. The rumors of Tekintamgak’s cheating have been widespread and not simply limited to the Partouche Poker Tour –he allegedly uses fake poker bloggers on the tournament floor to signal him the strength of an opponent’s hand—something the Turkish born German vehemently denies.
The case against Tekintamgak was turned over to the French authorities by the PPT who were unable to charge him with any crime –keep in mind that the type of cheating he is accused of would only be evident to experienced casino security officials—which has brought a €1.5 million lawsuit from Tekintamgak against the Partouche Poker Tour.
Despite having a Russ Hamilton-like reputation in the poker world, Tekintamgak has continued to play in tournaments around the world, and Card Player Magazine caught up with him at the current WPT Championship at the Bellagio where Tekintamgak answered a handful of questions for reporter Brian Pempus.
Pempus asked Tekintamgak about the lawsuit, and also how the scandal has affected him when he plays in major poker tournaments. If the accusations prove to be untrue then I really feel bad for Tekintamgak; if they are true then you can add liar alongside cheat to his titles considering this statement he made to Pempus:
“I can’t really concentrate. I am feeling pretty nervous right now. A guy at my table recognized me and wrote it online and told his friends about it. The casino staff here were talking about me. I realize everyone talks about me. A lot of bloggers and media come over and watch me. I am feeling pretty nervous about [the attention].”

With all of the major weekly guaranteed tournaments seeing a huge decrease in their guaranteed prize-pools it should come as no surprise that PokerStars has decided to make widespread adjustments to their upcoming Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) tournament series.
Not only did PokerStars drastically reduce the total guaranteed prize-pools for the SCOOP tournament series from $45 million down to $25 million, but they also decided to adjust the schedule to better accommodate European and Asian Players now that US poker players are completely out of the picture.
Each SCOOP tournament at PokerStars will now start three hours ahead of the original start time which will align with peak hours in Europe and Asia much better than the previous start times, which focused on US players.
Despite a nearly 50% cut in the total guaranteed prize-money, the SCOOP tournament series remains one of the largest in online poker, and is extremely popular due to its innovative format which sees three separate tournaments at small, medium, and high-stakes buy-ins for each tournament.
The 2011 SCOOP will feature a total of 38 poker tournaments and will begin on May 8th and run through May 22, 2011 when the three SCOOP Main Events will take place with buy-ins ranging from $109, to up over $10k:
Low: $109 buy-in - $750,000 guarantee
Med: $1,050 buy-in - $1,500,000 guarantee
High: $10,300 buy-in - $2,500,000 guarantee
For the complete SCOOP schedule you can visit www.pokerstars.com, or www.pokerstars.eu

It’s hard to argue against Vanessa Selbst being the best female tournament poker player in the world, and it’s becoming increasingly hard to argue against her being the best tournament poker player in the world regardless of gender. Selbst’s most recent feather in her cap came at the PokerStars NAPT Mohegan Sun Main Event where for the second straight year she has been crowned the champion.
By winning the NAPT Mohegan Sun for the second straight year Selbst is the first two-time winner on the fledgling tour –not too surprising when you consider the NAPT has had all of four official stops—and is now over the $4 million mark in career tournament earnings.
The Team PokerStars pro now has four major tournament victories since 2008 including a WSOP bracelet in the 2008 $1,500 PLO tournament, the 2010 NAPT Mohegan Sun title, the 2010 Partouche Poker Tour title, and now the 2011 NAPT Mohegan Sun title.
Selbst has always performed well in Connecticut poker tournaments, perhaps the Yale Law Student feels at home in Connecticut, considering she has also won two preliminary tournaments at the Foxwoods World Poker Finals in 2009.
Here is a look at how the final table of the NAPT Mohegan Sun Main Event played out:
1. Vanessa Selbst — $450,000
2. Dan Shak — $254,000
3. Tyler Kenney — $170,000
4. Thomas Hoglund Jr. — $120,000
5. Vincent Rubianes — $90,000
6. Joe Tehan — $70,000
7. Aaron Overton –$50,000
8. Steve O’Dwyer — $32,330

It seems like Eugene Katchalov has been around the poker forever, but the reality is that Katchalov has only been playing poker since 2003, and didn’t become a recognizable poker pro until 2007. However, since 2004 Katchalov has pocketed over $6.1 million just from live poker tournaments, not to mention being the owner of a WCOOP bracelet and being one of the most respected high-stakes mixed-games players in poker.
Katchalov has joined the main group of PokerStars sponsored players as a Team Pro member, where he will represent the site at major tournaments around the world along with the likes of Viktor “Isildur1” Blom, Daniel Negreanu, Barry Greenstein, Vannessa Selbst, Vanessa Rousso, Jason Mercier and a slew of former Main Event champions like Jonathan Duhamel, Peter Eastgate, Joe Hachem, and Chris Moneymaker.
When asked what joining Team PokerStars Pro meant to him, Katchalov told the PokerStars blog: “It means being a part of what I believe to be a great team of players and a very professional and serious poker site that opens up many opportunities to its players and Pros. I also have a sense of achievement since I am given the opportunity to represent the largest and most successful poker site around.”
Without a doubt PokerStars will be featuring Eugene Katchalov prominently in upcoming promotions and events.
