Titan Poker pro Trickett captures Partouche Poker Tour Championship

Monday, November 14th, 2011

After a two-month delay (a la the World Series of Poker) the Partouche Poker Tour Main Event final table participants were back in action this past weekend, with the €1 million first-place prize-money on the line, and what a final table it was!

With a log-jam at the top of the leader-board entering play, Team Titan Poker’s Sam Trickett found himself leading the field, but not by very much. And with the likes of 2011 WSOP bracelet winner and POY candidate Oleksii Kovalchuk, French poker star Roger Hairabedian, Alexander Dovzhenko, and Mads Wissing still in the running, the Partouche Poker Tour title was within any player’s grasp.

That said, Trickett would prove to be too much for the rest of the table, and even a 2-to-1 chip disadvantage during heads-up play was not enough to keep the UK poker pro out of the winner’s circle. The win was the third score of the year for Trickett that totaled over $1 million in prize-money (the other two coming in high-roller events at the Aussie Millions) and his $4.5 million in tournament earnings for the year is starting to approach Erik Seidel territory!

Here is a look at how the final nine players finished at the 2011 Partouche poker Tour final table:

  1. Samuel Trickett — €1,000,000
  2. Salman Behbehani — €600,000
  3. Oleksii Kovalchuk — €379,760
  4. Ilan Boujenah — €300,000
  5. Roger Hairabedian — €230,000
  6. Alexander Dovzhenko — €190,000
  7. Mustapha Kanit — €160,000
  8. Alexandre Coussy — €130,000
  9. Mads Wissing — €100,000

Mclean Karr wins second poker tournament of the month

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Poker pro Mclean Karr is no stranger when it comes to live poker tournaments happening across the globe, but the young American poker pro has put together a fabulous 2011 tournament campaign, including two major wins this month alone.

Earlier this month Karr was in Macau to watch his good friend Michael Phelps compete on the world stage; Phelps later returned the favor by railing Karr during a high-roller tournament at the Poker King Club StarWorld Macau Casino that featured a $100k HKD buy-in. Karr bested a field of 20 participants to walk away with the over $800k HKD for first-place.

And now yesterday it was reported that Karr had won the Parx Open Poker Classic, netting Karr an impressive $74,725, and diamond bracelet from Golden Nugget Jewelers from Philadelphia. Karr won the title holding pocket Aces against Dan Smith’s dominated A/J. Other well-known members of the final table included Will Failla, Ronald Lee, and Michael Sica.

To round out Mclean Karr’s International Man of Mystery resume: In March Karr captured the WPT Vienna High-Roller tournament, pocketing over $260k in prize-money, which he followed up with by securing a five-figure cash at the EPT Grand Final Main Event in Madrid, Spain. Other locales where Karr has pocketed a little bit of coin this year include San Remo, Italy and at the WSOP in Las Vegas this summer. All-in-all it sounds like Mclean Karr leads a fairly interesting life; travelling around the globe to play in poker tournaments, occasionally accompanied by a high-profile celebrity!

Joseph Cheong makes second deep run in WSOP ME

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

Reminiscent of Greg Raymer’s improbable run where after winning the 2004 World Series of Poker Main Event he finished in 25th place in the 2005 WSOP Main Event, or even Dan Harrington’s back-to-back final tables in 2003 and 2004, Joseph Cheong has followed up his 3rd place finish in 2010 with a 114th place finish in the 2011 WSOP Main Event.

While on the surface Cheong’s 114th place finish seems far less impressive, when you take into account the size of the fields Cheong navigated through in 2010 and 2011, compared to Raymer’s 2004 and 2005 runs, and Harrington’s 2003 and 2004 runs, it becomes clear that a case could be made for Cheong having the best two-year run in the Main Event of the three!

  • Raymer bested a field of 2,576 in 2004, and followed that up with a 25th out of 5,619. Total prize-money won $5,304,680.
  • Harrington finished 3rd in 2003 out of 839 total participants, followed by a 4th place finish out of 2,576 players in 2004. Total prize-money won $2,150,000.
  • Cheong  finished 3rd out of a total of 7,319 entrants –the second most all-time—in 2010, and then 114th out of 6,856 entrants –the third most all-time—in 2011. Total prize-money won $4,184,900.

Precisely whose performance is more impressive can be debated ad nauseam, but all three players have to be considered in the conversation when it comes to the best back-to-back performances in the WSOP Main Event in the Internet era.

Two other players also followed up on deep runs in the 2010 Main Event as Jean-Robert Bellande and Christian Harder both posted back-to back Top 100 finishes in 2010 and 2011 as well.

Sami ‘LarsLuzak’ Kelopuro wins SCOOP Championship

Thursday, May 26th, 2011

With 380 entrants the $10,000 buy-in PokerStars SCOOP Main Event shattered its $2.5 million guaranteed prize-pool, with the final tally hitting $3.8 million, and battling for the title on Day 2 of the tournament were some of the biggest names in poker including EPT winner Toby Lewis, online pro Sami “LarsLuzak/lrslzk” Kelopuro, EPT Berlin champ Ben “NeverScaredB” Wilinofsky, online star Matt “ADZ124″ Marafioti, and Team PokerStars Pro and 2005 WSOP Main Event Champion Joe Hachem.

In the end two of those players would wind up at the final table with one of them walking home with the SCOOP Main Event title –despite not winning the most prize-money thanks to a 5-way deal at the end of the tournament.

Sami “lrslzk” Kelopuro and Toby “810ofclubs” Lewis were both amongst the final nine players in the tournament, but it was Kelopuro who would go on to win the title, with Lewis finishing in 6th place and missing out on an equity chop made between the final five players.

Here is a look at the payouts for the final table of the 2011 SCOOP Main Event at PokerStars:

1. Sami “Lrslzk” Kelopuro (Finland) $504,691.09*
2. Tagult (Germany) $540,125,82*
3. StigR (Norway) $390,000.00*
4. altiFC (Germany) $369,581.05*
5. danskemann (Norway) $430,002.05*
6. Toby “810ofclubs” Lewis (United Kingdom) $167,200.00
7. GotURead (Netherlands) $129,200.00

Galen Hall leads WPT Championship final table

Friday, May 20th, 2011

As the chip-leader heading into the final table of the 2011 $25k WPT Championship, Galen Hall is apparently trying to lock up the Card Player Magazine and BLUFF Magazine Player of the Year Awards before the year is even half over. Hall, who won the PCA Main Event in January, would become the first player in history to win two of poker’s most prestigious tournaments in the same year if he can outlast Scott Seiver, Justin Young, Freddy Bonyadi, Roger Teska, and Tony Gargano at Friday’s final table.

Seiver, who is one of poker’s rising stars in both tournaments and cash games, trails Hall by just 20,000 chips heading into the televised final table is looking for his first major tournament title since winning a WSOP bracelet in 2008.

In previous years both Seiver and Hall would be eyeing not just the prize-money for winning the WPT Championship, but a likely sponsorship deal to boot. Unfortunately for both players, Black Friday has made US poker pros expendable to online poker sites. Should either Hall or Seiver win the title they will likely have lost out on a very lucrative sponsorship deal –just another effect of the US crackdown on online poker.

Here is a look at the final six players’ chip-counts and seating assignments heading into Friday’s final table:

Seat 1: Galen Hall — 5,095,000
Seat 2: Justin Young — 1,750,000
Seat 3: Tony Gargano — 3,550,000
Seat 4: Roger Teska — 3,600,000
Seat 5: Scott Seiver — 5,075,000
Seat 6: Freddy Bonyadi — 2,470,000

Galen Hall leads remaining 15 players at WPT Championship

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

What a year it has been for Galen Hall at the poker tables. The young pro started 2011 off by winning the PCA Championship (worth $2.3 million), and he has also final tabled the €25,000 buy-in High-Roller tournament at the EPT Grand Final in Madrid as well as finishing runner-up in the Champion of Champions tournament there. Now Hall finds himself sitting at the top of the leader-board at the $25k WPT Championship with just 15 players remaining.

With a win in the WPT Championship Hall would vault to over $4 million in prize money won in 2011, before we even close the book on May! However, getting to the final table, let alone winning the WPT Championship, will be no simple task considering the remaining players are virtually all top poker pros.

Standing in Hall’s way are such talents as Scott Seiver, Steven Kelly, Ashton Griffin, Daniel Alaei, and 2010 WPT Championship winner David Williams. You can expect a stacked final table, as 13 of the remaining 15 players are instantly recognizable names in the poker world.

Here are the chip counts for the remaining 15 players in the 2011 $25k WPT Championship taking place at the Bellagio:

1.    Galen Hall — 3,438,000
2.    Sam El Sayed — 2,774,000
3.    Roger Teska — 2,194,000
4.    Scott Seiver — 2,001,000
5.    Shannon Shorr — 1,786,000
6.    Steven Kelly — 1,674,000
7.    Tony Gargano — 1,577,000
8.    Ashton Griffin — 1,474,000
9.    Nenad Medic — 1,282,000

11.    Freddy Bonyadi — 700,000
12.    David Peters — 633,000
13.    Daniel Alaei — 530,000

Local qualifier wins big at Irish Poker Open

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

When Niall Smyth placed a €10 bet on the horses, and saw it turn into €200, he probably couldn’t imagine that his €10 wager would eventually lead to €650,000 score and the title of 2011 Irish Poker Open Champion. Smyth started the final table as the chip-leader, and on his way to the €550,000 first-place prize-money –Smyth also took home an additional €100,000 for being the Sole Survivor Standing from a PaddyPower Poker promotion—he would have to battle the most experienced player at the final table in heads-up play, Surinder Sunar.

Smyth also had some competition for the €100,000 Sole Survivor bonus as Karl Rudwall and Rob Taylor were also both in search of that added prize, but Taylor and Rudwall exited in 7th and 6th place respectively, immediately boosting Smyth’s payday by six-figures.

“It started when I put €10 each way on the winner of the English Grand National, I won €200 euro and now I have €650,000. Surinder is such a great player, my support has been fantastic, and here I am!”

Here is a look at the payouts for the final table of the Irish Poker Open:

1.    Niall Smyth– €550,000
2.    Surinder Sunar – €290,000
3.    Martin Petri – €180,000
4.    Seamus Cahill – €145,000
5.    Aleksi Savela – €115,000
6.    Karl Rudwall – €85,000
7.    Rob Taylor – €63,000
8.    John Eames – €45,000
9.    Niall McCann – €30,000

PokerStars adjusts SCOOP schedule and guarantees

Monday, April 25th, 2011

With all of the major weekly guaranteed tournaments seeing a huge decrease in their guaranteed prize-pools it should come as no surprise that PokerStars has decided to make widespread adjustments to their upcoming Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) tournament series.

Not only did PokerStars drastically reduce the total guaranteed prize-pools for the SCOOP tournament series from $45 million down to $25 million, but they also decided to adjust the schedule to better accommodate European and Asian Players now that US poker players are completely out of the picture.
Each SCOOP tournament at PokerStars will now start three hours ahead of the original start time which will align with peak hours in Europe and Asia much better than the previous start times, which focused on US players.
Despite a nearly 50% cut in the total guaranteed prize-money, the SCOOP tournament series remains one of the largest in online poker, and is extremely popular due to its innovative format which sees three separate tournaments at small, medium, and high-stakes buy-ins for each tournament.

The 2011 SCOOP will feature a total of 38 poker tournaments and will begin on May 8th and run through May 22, 2011 when the three SCOOP Main Events will take place with buy-ins ranging from $109, to up over $10k:

Low: $109 buy-in  -  $750,000 guarantee
Med: $1,050 buy-in  -  $1,500,000 guarantee
High: $10,300 buy-in  -  $2,500,000 guarantee
