In a very bold statement/prediction during one of his stints in the commentator’s booth for the World Series of Poker Main Event live stream on ESPN 3, 11-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth stated that he thinks online poker will be legalized in the United States this year, and went on to claim that once it is you can expect to see upwards of 15,000 entrants in the WSOP Main Event!
I’m not sure what Hellmuth is basing this on –especially the “this year” part considering how slow Congress moves on crucial issues, let alone something as innocuous as online poker—but I rarely see or hear Hellmuth making outlandish predictions: Name dropping yes, predictions no!
Hellmuth did bring up a good point in saying that once online poker was legalized in Italy, PokerStars.it immediately became the fourth largest online poker site in the world, and was bumped to #5 when France legalized online poker and PokerStars.fr claimed the #4 spot. So, Hellmuth’s claims of a second, even larger, Poker Boom are probably not that far off considering the US market is vastly larger than either France or Italy, and the US has a much deeper tradition when it comes to poker.
We’ll have to wait and see when it comes to the legislation, but if that day ever does come to light… Watch out! Can you even imagine 15,000 players in the WSOP Main Event? The total prize-pool would be $150,000,000, putting the top-prize in the $15 million – $20 million range!

Apparently with online poker effectively banned in the United States, would-be scammers and fraudsters have turned to the poker industry instead of its players as marks. In his most recent blog post, Dusty Schmidt recounted how the poker publishing company he co-owns, Imagine Media Inc., was the victim of credit card fraud.
According to Schmidt, a person using the name James Allen –which is likely a false name—purchased a large quantity of his newest book, Don’t Listen to Phil Hellmuth, using a fraudulent credit card.
Schmidt has turned the matter over to the proper authorities, but also listed his reasons for bringing the matter to light:
“My reasons for notifying the poker community about this issue are two-fold. First off, it would only seem logical that this thief is not so infatuated with my book that he needed a massive number of copies for himself! We are operating under the assumption that the theft occurred because the person purporting to be James Allen has the intention of selling the books to a third party… Secondly, it is definitely possible that Imagine Media isn’t the only poker company that this thief is targeting. I have no knowledge of his intentions, but it seems reasonable to think that this person will attempt to strike again.”
Schmidt is asking for the poker community to keep their eyes peeled on anyone trying to sell discounted copies of the book, and it should also be noted that the book is only legitimately available at a few distinct websites.

PokerStars will no longer be servicing the Washington State online poker market. PokerStars announced earlier today that the online poker site will no longer provide real money poker games to residents of Washington State.
This is a humongous blow to the online poker market in the United States. Up until now the poker site went ahead and offered real money online gambling to Washington Residents, and paid affilaites for traffic brought to them from Washington. That’s all changed now.
Before it was believed that the government in the United States could not legally and constitutionally regulate the use of the Internet to play poker, and that the government at the very least could not discriminate against online poker providers in favor of local land based operations.
What changed? The Washington Supreme Court ruled in favor the states ban on online gambling in favor of the censorship of their residents activities. Washingtonians, it’s time to watch porn and rated R movies, before someone says it’s immoral and you no longer have the option. In fact, have a cigarette, drink some caffeine, and hit on a Milf while you have some of your freedom.
When you’re done with all that. Either find a new way to accomodate Washington gamblers, or remove marketing for that state.

The whole world’s going crazy!
Here we go again, just like France, Israel, Australia, and the United States, South Africa is trying to get rid of online gambling. The Gauteng Gambling Board has ruled the gambling using any digital product with South Africa is against the law.
There are gambling companies that operate out of South Africa, media programs, gambling sites, etc. Time will tell how these companies will proceed. Will they relocate established businesses to other countries, costing local citizens jobs? ? Ban South African IP addresses?
According to reports, both operators and gamblers are considered to be at in violation of the law when South Africans gamble online.
You as an Affiliate May Be Breaking The Law
In fact, according to some reports, affiliates and others that advertise or facilitate the advertisement of online gambling are also in violation of the law.
The penalty?
Up to 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of right around £1 million, the equivalent to R10 million. Mayhap South Africa is just looking for a big paydays?

On June 1st the Norwegian government put new gambling laws into effect. Now with the laws in effect customers who have Norwegian bank and credit cards are having trouble placing any kind of electronic payment. Not only are payments to online poker rooms and casinos being denied but other online transactions as well.
The new laws in Norway are similar to the UIGEA in the United States. Financial institutions are supposed to deny online transactions from online casinos. The list created by the government for banks to deny has two names on it, Norsk Tipping and Rikstoto.
However since transactions are taking place electronically the automated system is not only blocking online casino and poker payments it is also blocking payments for other online charges such as casinos that may be abroad or cruise shops and other tourist destinations. Those who have this problem must enter in many different contract agreements with Norway VISA to be able to have their transactions go through.
The new law was created to protect those who are addicted to gambling. But it does not seem to be working. Players in Norway can easily get a foreign bank account via online and then use that account to play online casino games so the new bill is affecting just a small portion of those who live in Norway.

Two of the largest online gambling companies have been in talks of merging for some time now. Party Gaming and Bwin Interactive were in talks to merge their two companies but now the talks have reportedly come to an end.
There has been speculation about the two talking of merging for many months now and now it has been confirmed that the talks have ceased. Hannes Androsch the supervisory board chairman of Bwin has confirmed that the talks have fallen through.
Androsch commented in Austria’s Trend magazine: “In the end, talks have not led to the desired outcome.” Many analysts predicted that if the two companies had been able to merge it would have set off a large wave of consolidation in the industry.
Austria’s Trend magazine also stated that they think Bwin will now look to partner with a company in the United States. The magazine stated that the company is considering the purchase of a small stake of around 11 percent of an unidentified company located in San Francisco.
This speculation was somewhat confirmed as Norbet Teufelberger the co chief executive of Bwin commented in the magazine that the company would like to enter the United States with a local partner that is competent. He also commented that Bwin is in talks to do just that.

Gambling in Australia is big business. Players have been fans of slot machines for years and now poker has become the new game to play. There are many poker pros coming out of Australia and they are helping to spread the game in the country. Now many residents of the state are going online to wager their cash in poker games. And even though players are enjoying online gambling, officials of the country are not so keen on the idea.
Government officials are starting to question how online gambling will affect the country and they may be creating a similar ban such as the United States UIGEA ban. This past Wednesday the Australian government announced they do not support the liberalization of online gambling. This announcement was made despite the Productivity Commission giving a positive recommendation for online gambling.
The Australian government will be looking at regulatory approaches that other countries have used which includes the United States. The government will then decide if online gambling will be good for the Australian government to profit and be able to regulate.
Australia is just another country in a long list of countries and areas in the world that are considering the option of not allowing online gambling in their area. Although people around the world would love to have the option to enjoy online gambling, governments are overriding what their residents would like and creating bans against online gambling.

The Merge Poker Network has grown considerably over the past few weeks as they have added new poker sites to their network. Many thought that the poker networks would suffer from lower traffic volumes moving from their existing network but that was not the case.
Merge Poker Network welcomed the Players Only, Super Book and Sportsbook to their network in the past few weeks and the network has since reported an increase in traffic by 160%. PokerScout.com confirmed these statistics and the Merge Poker Network now sits at 17th in the poker networks list climbing from the 20th spot in just one week.
Not only do the new sites benefit with the increase but existing sites benefit as well. The Merge Poker Network is now reporting around 1000 players at peak time which is good numbers for the network. The new poker rooms used to operate on the Cake Poker Network and many in the poker industry though that the Cake Poker Network would suffer from the loss but they have held their spot at number 10 on the list.
Since the three poker rooms left the Cake Poker Network, they have only seen a 16% decline in traffic. The network still powers such sites as Cake Poker of course and Doyles Room, both of which continue to bring in players.
Overall the two competing networks are great for the poker industry. Both are accepting of United States players so we all win as the two fight to bring the best gaming offerings, promotions and tournaments to their players.

Phil Hellmuth says online poker will be legalized THIS YEAR
