British poker pro Jake Cody wins WPT London

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

The World Poker Tour’s inaugural stop in London was a rousing success, and was topped off by the homegrown Brit, Jake Cody, taking down the Championship title. The win was the second major tournament victory in 2010 for the young poker star –Cody previously won the EPT Deauville title.

Cody took home the first-place prize-money of £273,783 for the win, bringing his total winnings for the year to over $1.6 million! The young British pro is truly turning into a force to reckoned with on the poker tournament trail, and now stands just a WSOP bracelet away from joining Roland DeWolfe and Gavin Griffin as the only poker players to win an EPT, WPT, and WSOP title –perhaps he can accomplish the feat at the upcoming WSOP Europe held in London?

Despite drawing only 171 players due to the EPT poker tournament running concurrently over in the vacation paradise of Vilamoura Portugal, the WPT London event was still seen as a major success, which will be critical for the tour’s long-term success as it goes head-to-head with the European Poker Tour for domination of the European tournament scene. At the moment the WPT is the only poker tour that has a presence in both Europe and the US.

Here are the complete final table results from the tournament:

1.    Jake Cody – £273,783
2.    Nichlas Mattsson – £176,979
3.    Bruce Atkinson – £93,316
4.    Kristoffer Thorson – £56,311
5.    Giovanni Safina – £42,322
6.    Sandiep Khosa – £34,189
7.    Fabian Quoss – £26,144
8.    Gareth Teatum – £18,100

Cantu takes big chip lead into Day 3 of EPT Vilamoura

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

After two full days of action in the second stop on the European Poker Tour Season 7 schedule, taking place in Vilamoura Portugal, the impressive starting field of 384 players has been pared down to just 69, and it’s American poker pro Brandon Cantu atop the leader-board with a towering stack of 557,400 chips. Should he take down the EPT Vilamoura championship, Cantu would join a very exclusive group of poker players that have won a World Series of Poker bracelet, a World Poker Tour title, and a European Poker Tour title. Currently only Roland DeWolfe and Gavin Griffin have accomplished the impressive trifecta.

Cantu will have his work cut out for him however. The remaining field of 69 players is loaded with top-flight poker talent like JP Kelly, Luca Pagano, Nuno Coelo, and Arnaud Mattern. The latter narrowly missed taking down the first tournament of the EPT Season 7 tour in Estonia, and is looking to make history of his own as the first two-time EPT champion.

But don’t feel too bad for the players who have been eliminated; Vilamoura is a vacation paradise with some of the best beaches and golfing in the world, so anyone who booked an extended stay but has already been eliminated still has quite a bit to do!

Day 3 of the EPT Vilamoura poker tournament will begin at Noon local time.

384 players enter EPT Vilamoura poker tournament

Monday, August 30th, 2010

The European Poker Tour continues to break attendance across Europe, this time it was the Portuguese tournament record that fell by the wayside. The EPT’s €5,000 buy-in Championship Event in Vilamoura Portugal attracted a total of 384 entrants over the two Day 1 flights.

The 384 players represents the largest field for a Portuguese poker tournament besting the 322 entrants that participated in last season’s Vilamoura tournament on the EPT– and the €1,862,400 prize-pool is also the richest in Portuguese poker history.

One particular entrant is sure to garner some additional attention after an alleged chat-log was posted on the 2+2 Poker Forum. Sorel Mizzi, high on the leader-board with 132,000 chips, has been accused of trying to assemble a Multi-Accounting/Ghosting team by an anonymous poster. Mizzi replied in the thread that the conversation was bits and pieces of other conversations, and fabrications, that took part over a year’s time, and that he was contacted by an extortionist threatening to take the conversation public. However, Mizzi’s vague details –specifically which parts of the conversation are fabricated and which are real—as well as his condescending talk have many calling for his head.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out should Sorel make a deep run in Vilamoura.

PokerStars EPT heads to Portugal for next tournament

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

The second stop on Season 7 of the PokerStars.net European Poker Tour will be in Vilamoura Portugal from August 28th through September 2nd. Vilamoura is an area popular with tourists and vacationers for its lavish beaches, and is one of the hottest golf destinations in the world. The €5,000 buy-in Championship tournament will take place over five days at the Casino Vilamoura, with attendance capped at 700 players.

Last season’s stop in Vilamoura saw a spectacular tournament unfold, with 322 players competing for the €404,793 first-place prize-money. The tournament set a record in Portugal with its prize-pool of more than 1.5 million, making it the richest poker tournament ever held in the country. Organizers for this year’s tournament are expecting an even larger turnout this time around.

Last year’s final table may have looked unremarkable at the time, when local businessman Antonio Matias captured the title, but looking back the final table may have been one of the strongest in EPT history!

In addition to top players Jeff Sarwer and Michel Abecassis, two of the final table participants went on to have phenomenal EPT campaigns during Season 6: EPT Online Qualifier of the Year award winner Pierre Neuville was present, as was Jan Skampa who would win the EPT Prague Championship later in the year.

2010-2011 PokerStars.net EPT schedule

Monday, August 16th, 2010

It’s hard to believe that we have already reached Season 7 of the PokerStars.net European Poker Tour, and over that time, what started as a 7-tournament series back in 2004 has nearly doubled in size with 13 tournaments on the Season 7 schedule.

Since its inception the EPT has grown into one of the most popular poker tours in the world, and has been the launching pad of many poker careers. Poker superstars such as Noah Boeken, Ram Vaswani, Rob Hollink, Patrik Antonius, Roland DeWolfe, Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grosspellier, Sandra Naujoks, and Liv Boeree have all won EPT tournaments.

The first stop for the EPT is in Tallinn Estonia, and is currently underway, and the tour will conclude with two tournaments that have yet to be finalized: a stop in San Remo, Italy, with dates still to be determined, and a second location that has yet to be announced as well.

EPT Season 7 Announced by PokerStars

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

As the sixth season of the PokerStars European Poker Tour has ended, PokerStars is looking forward to the next season of the popular poker series. The online poker room has already begun to plan the seventh season of the European Poker Tour.

The seventh season will kick off in August in Estonia and the series will have thirteen events. The grand final location and date has yet to be determined but the rest of the schedule has been announced. Several cities on the EPT seventh season have hosted EPT events before and they include: Prague, Barcelona and London.

One surprise on the schedule is the Berlin, Germany stop. The seventh season will see the tour stopping once again in Berlin, where this past season an armed robbery occurred. The event will take place at the Grand Hyatt, which is where the robbery took place. However this time I would imagine security will be beefed up to keep an incident like the armed robbery from happening again.

In a press release for the EPT season 7, John Duthie the founder of the EPT commented: “The EPT just gets bigger and better every season and it shows the passion and enthusiasm players feel for our events. Season 6 had a thousand more players than in Season 5 and we expect the numbers to keep on growing. The prize pool last season was well over €56 million, a €4 million increase on the previous year.”
