Titan Poker pro Trickett captures Partouche Poker Tour Championship

Monday, November 14th, 2011

After a two-month delay (a la the World Series of Poker) the Partouche Poker Tour Main Event final table participants were back in action this past weekend, with the €1 million first-place prize-money on the line, and what a final table it was!

With a log-jam at the top of the leader-board entering play, Team Titan Poker’s Sam Trickett found himself leading the field, but not by very much. And with the likes of 2011 WSOP bracelet winner and POY candidate Oleksii Kovalchuk, French poker star Roger Hairabedian, Alexander Dovzhenko, and Mads Wissing still in the running, the Partouche Poker Tour title was within any player’s grasp.

That said, Trickett would prove to be too much for the rest of the table, and even a 2-to-1 chip disadvantage during heads-up play was not enough to keep the UK poker pro out of the winner’s circle. The win was the third score of the year for Trickett that totaled over $1 million in prize-money (the other two coming in high-roller events at the Aussie Millions) and his $4.5 million in tournament earnings for the year is starting to approach Erik Seidel territory!

Here is a look at how the final nine players finished at the 2011 Partouche poker Tour final table:

  1. Samuel Trickett — €1,000,000
  2. Salman Behbehani — €600,000
  3. Oleksii Kovalchuk — €379,760
  4. Ilan Boujenah — €300,000
  5. Roger Hairabedian — €230,000
  6. Alexander Dovzhenko — €190,000
  7. Mustapha Kanit — €160,000
  8. Alexandre Coussy — €130,000
  9. Mads Wissing — €100,000

Big names soar during record setting World Series of Poker Europe

Friday, October 21st, 2011

With the two Day 1 flights now in the books, the World Series of Poker’s decision to move the WSOP Europe from its four-year home in London to Cannes can no longer be argued, and has to be considered one of the most successful decisions in tournament poker history.

In all, 593 players registered over the two starting days, easily surpassing the old attendance record of 362 entrants, set back in 2007 and matched in 2008 –although it should be noted that even though the buy-in remained at 10,000, the buy-in this year is considerably lower due to the Euro being valued far less than the British Pound.

Even though the field size nearly doubled, the big names are still performing well, in what has historically been a tournament where few but the very top players enter: Amongst the chip leaders entering Day 2 on Monday are Chris Moorman, Darren Elias, Leo Boxell, Emil Patel, Johnny Chan, Ben Lamb, Carlos Mortensen, Will Failla, Chad Brown, Tommy Vedes, Alexander Kostritsyn, Robert Mizrachi, McLean Karr, Victor Ramdin and Tony G.

Even with the French government taking a further 4% off the top of the prize-pool, the players are still battling for nearly €5.7 million, with the winner looking at a €1.4 million payday and a WSOP bracelet to boot. A total of 64 players will make the money in the 2011 WSOP Europe Main Event, with the top eight players all receiving six-figure paydays, and the 64th place finisher walking away with €20k.

Caesars Cup Update: Brunson and Seed out, Mercier and Lamb in

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

Phi Hellmuth had to do some last-minute juggling of his hand-picked team that will be representing America as they go up against Team Europe in the upcoming Caesars Cup at the 2011 World Series of Poker Europe. The inaugural Caesars Cup was held at the 2009 WSOP Europe, where Annette Obrestad’s Team Europe easily dispatched the Daniel Negreanu led Team America, and now two years later the Americans (which includes Canada) are looking for revenge.

While Negreanu will once again represent Team America, this time around it’s Phil Hellmuth who was selected as the captain of Team America, with his European counterpart being Bertrand “ElkY” Grosspellier. Each captain is allowed to select four additional players to round out their team of five, and the two couldn’t have taken more opposite approaches in their selections.

Hellmuth initially went with experience, selecting Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, Daniel Negreanu, and Huck Seed for his roster, but both Doyle and Seed were late scratches this week, which left Hellmuth scrambling to find not one, but two replacements. Fortunately for the Poker Brat, there are plenty of top American players over in Cannes for the WSOP Europe, and Hellmuth eventually settled on two of the games top young talents in Jason Mercier and Ben Lamb.

Here is a look at the updated rosters of the two teams that will compete in the Caesars Cup:

Team America: Phil Hellmuth (captain), Daniel Negreanu, Johnny Chan, Jason Mercier, and Ben Lamb

Team Europe: Bertrand Grosspellier (captain), Dario Minieri, Gus Hansen, Max Lykov, and Jake Cody

Dusty Schmidt newest member of BlueFire Poker

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Despite the virtual online poker blackout in the United States, the online poker training site BlueFire Poker has continued to grow, including making some major additions to their already impressive roster of poker coaches. The latest addition to the BlueFire Poker team is one of the most well-respected poker coaches in the industry, Dusty “Leatherass9” Schmidt.

Schmidt is one of the most successful online poker grinders in the history of the game, and has no qualms about being a grinder; evidenced by his chosen online poker moniker of “Leatherass”. Schmidt can boast what is possibly the single greatest statistic in online poker history: He has never had a losing month in his 5-year career!

The former Team PokerStars Pro (Schmidt resigned his position with PokerStars following Black Friday) and perennial Supernova Elite player has also authored several highly acclaimed poker books including Treat Your Poker Like A Business and Don’t Listen to Phil Hellmuth.

Schmidt’s role at BlueFire Poker will be to create 6-max and full ring NLHE content for the site, which already boasts such online poker heavyweights as Phil “OMGClayAiken/MrSweets28” Galfond, 2010 WSOP November Niner Jason “PBJaxx” Senti, High Stakes pros Niman “Samoleus” Kenkre and Martin “Dr Giggy” Fournier-Giguere, as well as the more recently added Sit & Go and Multi-Table tournament pros.

Mclean Karr wins second poker tournament of the month

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Poker pro Mclean Karr is no stranger when it comes to live poker tournaments happening across the globe, but the young American poker pro has put together a fabulous 2011 tournament campaign, including two major wins this month alone.

Earlier this month Karr was in Macau to watch his good friend Michael Phelps compete on the world stage; Phelps later returned the favor by railing Karr during a high-roller tournament at the Poker King Club StarWorld Macau Casino that featured a $100k HKD buy-in. Karr bested a field of 20 participants to walk away with the over $800k HKD for first-place.

And now yesterday it was reported that Karr had won the Parx Open Poker Classic, netting Karr an impressive $74,725, and diamond bracelet from Golden Nugget Jewelers from Philadelphia. Karr won the title holding pocket Aces against Dan Smith’s dominated A/J. Other well-known members of the final table included Will Failla, Ronald Lee, and Michael Sica.

To round out Mclean Karr’s International Man of Mystery resume: In March Karr captured the WPT Vienna High-Roller tournament, pocketing over $260k in prize-money, which he followed up with by securing a five-figure cash at the EPT Grand Final Main Event in Madrid, Spain. Other locales where Karr has pocketed a little bit of coin this year include San Remo, Italy and at the WSOP in Las Vegas this summer. All-in-all it sounds like Mclean Karr leads a fairly interesting life; travelling around the globe to play in poker tournaments, occasionally accompanied by a high-profile celebrity!

Bluefire Poker adds two new coaches

Monday, August 15th, 2011

The coaching roster at Bluefire Poker has been growing since the beginning of the year, and despite Black Friday the number of poker coaches at the site has once again increased. Bluefire Poker recently ran a contest to determine their next poker coach, and after tons of feedback from their members, one of the industry’s top poker training sites has decided on adding not one but two new coaches!

Here is a look at the new coaches at the site:

JP Zdancewicz

A Heads-Up and 6-Max No Limit Holdem and PLO specialist who began playing in 2007, JP knows a thing or two about coaching as he drew upon some of the best minds in the industry when he first started out himself. Now JP finds himself on the other end of the player/coach relationship, having already helped 20 students himself.

Coleman Whitsitt

Another Heads-Up and 6-Max specialist, Coleman focuses exclusively on No Limit Holdem and can be found playing anywhere from $2/$4 to $25/$50 when the conditions are right. Coleman received his own poker education from top players like Jay Rosenkrantz and Daniel Cates, and take credit for some of fellow Bluefire Poker coach JP Zdancewicz’s success, having coached his good friend early in his career.

The duo will join an already stacked roster of poker coaches which includes Bluefire Poker owner and founder Phil “OMGClayAiken” Galfond, 2010 WSOP November Niner Jason Senti, Niman “Samoleus” Kenkre, and Martin Fournier Giguere.

WSOP POY contender Ben Lamb leads heading into Day 3

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

At the end of Day 2b of the 2011 World Series of Poker Main Event a familiar name has maneuvered his way to the top of the leader-board, and will head into Day 3 on Thursday as the overall chip-leader, Ben Lamb.

Lamb, who is one of the handful of players who has a legitimate shot of running down Phil Hellmuth for the 2011 WSOP POY award, already has a WSOP win and runner-up finish on his 2011 WSOP resume, not to mention an 8th place finish in the $50k Players Championship and a 12th place showing in the $10k NLHE 6-Max Championship.

Lamb will head into Day 3 with 551,600 chips, and along with fellow poker pro Kevin Saul was the only player to crack the 500,000 chip-mark; Saul ended the day with 542,200. Another well-known poker pro who had a fantastic Day 2b was Patrik Antonius who finished the day with 361,000 chips, good enough for 7th place on the day, and just outside the top 10 overall.

Here is a look at the chip-leaders from Day 2a and Day 2b combined:

1.    Ben Lamb – 551,600
2.    Kevin Saul – 542,200
3.    Aleksandr Mozhnyakov – 478,600
4.    Ryan D’Angelo – 462,300
5.    Tuan Vo – 434,500
6.    Guillaume Darcourt – 410,500
7.    Narendra Banwari – 404,800
8.    Nicolas Fierro – 403,000
9.    Stephanie Albertini – 400,100
10.    Martin Torheim – 385,000

All of the players will now have Wednesday off before returning to the Rio on Thursday, which will be the last time that both the Amazon and Pavilion rooms are full of players.

2011 World Series of Poker POY race

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

With the world Series of Poker switching to the BLUFF Magazine formula for its Player of the Year award the competition is a lot closer than in years past where a mere two or three players would be in contention for the award. This time around, even after 40 tournaments in the books the top of the leader-board is extremely tight, and there are upwards of 50 players still within striking distance of the leader.

The new POY formula uses a baseline very similar to the old WSOP formula, but has the added wrinkle of two multipliers: One for the field size, and one for the amount of the buy-in. Another change in the formula has to do with the Main Event, which is no longer treated like any other bracelet tournament. Although the Main Event doesn’t offer multipliers like the preliminary events, it starts out by awarding 5-times the number of points as preliminary tournaments.

The final piece of the new formula is the inclusion of the WSOP Europe tournaments into the POY award. So now we will see the POY race carry over all the way to the WSOP Europe, and possibly to the Final Table of the Main Event in November.

Here is a look at the current POY leader-board courtesy of www.wsop.com:

1.    Phil Hellmuth — 420.75 points
2.    Samuel Stein — 402.63 points
3.    Mikhail Lakhitov — 401.80 points
4.    Mitch Schock — 364.81 points
5.    John Juanda — 336.00 points
6.    Amir Lehavot — 330.75 points
7.    Sean Getzwiller — 325.00 points
8.    Jason Mercier — 323.45 points
9.    Mark Schmid — 317.75 points
10.    Steve Landfish — 317.70 points

5-time WSOP bracelet winner Jeffrey Lisandro finally patched-up

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

After his three bracelet performance in the 2009 World Series of Poker –winning a bracelet in three different Stud disciplines: Seven-Card-Stud, Seven-Card-Stud hi/lo, and Razz—it seemed almost a foregone conclusion that Jeffrey Lisandro would land a sponsorship deal at a major online poker room… which somehow never came to fruition.

Two years later Lisandro has finally landed that sponsorship deal, but it’s not with Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars –who have their own issues after Black Friday—instead Lisandro landed at Matchbook.com as a Worldwide Ambassador for the gaming giant.

The announcement was made in a press release issued on June 13: “Matchbook.com and Check Raise Management are delighted to announce the signing of poker pro Jeffrey Lisandro; the all time Italian number one and five time World Series of Poker bracelet winner.”

Lisandro talked about the signing in the official press release, saying, “I’m truly delighted to be part of Matchbook, I’m looking forward to representing the brand on my travels around the world. My first competitive stop as an Ambassador is the World Series Of Poker where I’ll be announcing a whole range of exclusive poker markets at Matchbook.com. I am hungry for more bracelets, I plan to play as much as possible and if the cards fall my way I am confident I can add more titles at WSOP 2011″.

Matchbook.com came under new ownership in 2011, and after leaving the US market in February has been thriving in Europe. While the new ownership group remains a mystery, several sources have pointed to a collection of big name European Poker players having purchased the site.

After slow start poker pros coming on strong at 2011 WSOP

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

When Jake Cody took home the bracelet in Event #2, the $25k Heads-Up Championship, it looked as though it was going to be another year of big-time poker pros dominating at the WSOP, and for the first five events everything was going to plan with Eugene Katchalov and Allen Bari picking up bracelets as well. However, from Event #6 through Event #14 it was a litany of unknown players winning WSOP bracelets.

Since then it’s back to pro after pro taking home the titles at the WSOP, with recent winners including Brian Rast, John Juanda, Jason Somerville, and Bertrand “ElkY” Grosspellier winning four of the last six bracelets.

This past weekend Rast won his first bracelet in the $1,500 Pot Limit Holdem event, while Juanda bested Phil Hellmuth for his fifth bracelet in the $10k No Limit 2-7 Lowball Championship.

Yesterday it was ElkY and Somerville both bringing home their first bracelets: ElkY won the $10k Seven-Card-Stud Championship, while Somerville captured the title in the $1k No Limit Holdem Event.

With Jeff Sarwer, David “Doc” Sands, and Emil “Whitelime” Patel amongst the final nine players in the $1,500 PLO tournament; John Racener, John Juanda, Max Pescatori, Marco Traniello, Eric Buchman, and Shawn Buchanan all alive with 25 players remaining in the $2,500 8-Game Mix; and a ton of big names like Erik Seidel, Justin Bonomo, Tom Marchese, JP Kelly, and Toby Lewis in the final 40 of the $5k Shootout, it looks as if the trend may continue.
